O.k. I'm embarrassed to ask this as a long time Trek fan but why is the enterprise called the U.S.S. Enterprise? I'm assuming that stands for United States Ship? Surely it should be UFPS (United Federation of Planets) Enterprise??

I don't think they thought it out properly when first writing the show, then tacked the "United Space Ship" explanation bit on later.

    I remember reading that somewhere.
