    Hi all,
just thought i'd share this with you. I have a 72 Merc which i run on a classic policy with First Ireland, they're the broker, AIG are the Insurer. While getting some work carried out recently, (replacing seals on doors, front screen, and some chrome trim) my mech drew my attention to the fact that the screen was starting to delaminate (go milky around the edges), and that it would be worthwhile replacing the screen. Ok, a bit more expense than i thought (oh the joy of old-car ownership ) and i see the point - why replace all the trim/seals etc on a screen that will need replacing soon enough.

So i get my screen thru MercManBen (http://lichtenberg-classics.ie), get it fitted and send in the claim retrospectively. I knew that the insurance firm want you to go thru their appointed screen fitters, but i reckoned they're not gonna have a curved, early 70s merc screen knocking about, and thought id be grand. I claimed for approx E700. This might sound excessive, but it was for -
    1. the cost of the screen
    2. shipping of the screen (ex-Germany)
    3. Fitting.

Got a letter yesterday from AIG, stating that "article 20 of your policy blah blah........you must inform the Windscreen Claims Hotline on 01-xxxxxx" etc
The included a cheque for just over half the amount i claimed for, saying that they would cover this amount, but no more, because i didnt IMMEDIATELY contact the windscreen hotline

I know, i know, i should have read the smallprint, but i just thought i'd share this with you folks, should you have a similar experience, the motto is Report it straight away

I'm surprised they paid out at all if the screen was just delaminating, I thought cover was only for accidental damage. Good to know, all the same.

I hate insurance companies but in fairness I think you were lucky they paid you half.......€700 for a windscreen:eek::eek::eek:

tc20, did you explain to them why you had replaced the w/screen or leave it vague and suggest it was broken?

I think you were lucky to get half, too. I suspect if you'd told them first you were replacing a "milky" screen they would have given you zip.

i didnt mention why it was being replaced, other than the screen being 'broken'.

@gn3dr - E700 might seem like a lot, but the screen itself was E250, shipping from Germany was another E150, then the balance was labour. Merc screens of this era were fitted to very demanding and exacting standards, double sealed etc.

I didnt claim for the actual seals, as i thought this would be cheeky, and i was willing to incur this cost myself. Im not bemoaning the fact that i only got half my claim (well, maybe a little bit...), i just wanted to let you guys know to read the small print and inform the ins. co immediately if you suffer a cracked or broken w/screen yourselves.
