Someone tell me what this DVD player can do that a normal one can't. Does it play back "High Definition" dvds, and if it does do these not come in 2 formats, Blue Ray and the other, or is this something else? I'm asuming that this should be HDMI and that "HMDI" is a typo, or am I wrong?

    Lidl http://www.lidl.ie/ie/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20071129.p.MultimediaHMDIDVDPlayer

    Thanks

    🧐IMHO, God wants us all to ENJOY many,many ice-creams , 🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦🍦

Its dosnt play high definition discs just upscales your regular dvd's for your high definition tv. If you have a good quality dvd it should make things clearer but not much.

Any one got any more info on this, divx support etc ?

Sometimes the details arent always on the site or leaflet as i saw the details on the actual box that it can play MPEG4 & DIVX, but thats just some as you've got to look at the box more clearer as the staff wont always know when you ask them as i've found out a few times :(

Also what are Cb Cr-YPb Pr are these component (RGB cables)

Kristok, can I just get confirmation on that - this DVD player *definitely* does upscaling? Is it because it has a HDMI cable that you can assume that, or did you get the specs? The reason I ask is because upscaling is the crunch feature for me (getting a new HDTV) and when I posed the question over on the Home Entertainment -> Video Players and Recorders forum I got no reply at all.

Does anyone know if it has USB input? I'm looking for something that plays from an external hard drive.

    Thanks.

Yeah it has a usb port and its good value,a friend got one from Aldi for his father a while back,he finds it very good...Takes about 3 or 4 mins to load up a 320gb external hd which is 2/3 full....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 75 ✭✭Lanigamadan

Thanks Sqaull20 - that's enough for me to decide to get one (if there are any left by Thursday evening...)

With HDMI I presume it upscales. However, your new TV will also have an upscaling chip as most of what you watch will presumably be standard definition which needs to be upscaled to 720/1080. So it is a question of which upscales better - the TV or the DVD player?! I can't help you with that one though!

5.1 Analogue Audio Out, does this mean I can connect my home cinema speakers to it ? The DVD player from the home cinema set has given up the ghost, this would be ideal to replace it.

Would I be able to play videos stored on an ipod through this player? Not encoded to the ipod format, just kept on the ipod as if it were an external hard drive. I'd probably buy one if it can, but if not then I'd need an external hdd to really make use of it.

    Is this region free?

Not sure if any DVD with USB can playback a device which requires USB Host power... (someone else might know)

You can usually find a code unline to make it region free

    Might pick one up myself.

    Cheers Degsie for that.

anyone taking a punt? or have more info ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

    Just picked this up, it's a Silvercrest DP-5400x, says progressive scan (up to 1080i and includes 1024x768 & 1360 x 768)

The usual playback formats (xvid etc.)

Has HDMI output but doesn't include HDMI cable (I have my own anyway).

I haven't tested USB (it's USB2 apparently) or any of the card reader inputs, but the PQ is more or less the same as my Samsung HD-850

Looks wise, I got the black one, nice and sleek and the remote and manual are top notch.

    Not bad for 60 euro.
    open tray
    press 9 9 9 9
then 9 for region free ,or 1-8 for your desired region
    close tray
    done.

Just picked up the black one too. Nothing to add to what Zabbo has said except I'm very happy with the specs and looks too. I was intereseted in getting it because I'm picking up a 42" plasma next week - probably the Panasonic PV70.

    Another question,

Would it be possible to connect a PS3 (maybe using HDMI) so that you can use the surround sound for games?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

I'm not sure you can do that, in fairness why feed something that costs 700-800 into a 60 euro dvd player ?, why not use whatever surround sound setup you have directly with the PS3, again why would you use this dvd player over the BR PS3?

Hooked up my USB 250GB External Hard Drive, and its playing content perfectly, takes maybe 1-2mins to load the playlist but is working flawlessly from there.

Will the HDMI improve the picture quality of over regular scart. I have a LG 42 plasma and was thinking of getting one of these. Currently have a yamada dvd player

It uses progressive scan to upscale the source, that and a HDMI will give you a better Picture Quality in most cases.

wonder what are the chances there'll be any left by the weekend.

Anyone know it the Wireless Headphones are any good?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,339 ✭✭✭✭LoLth

does it definitely play the higher resolution dvds ?

I have a philips dvd player with HDMI but it wont play anything with 750 or 1080 resolution. could this be a limitation of using the scart instead of the hdmi cable ?

You can't get a Hi Def picture with scart you need to use the HDMI and that upscales the DVD to Hi Def resolutions.

i got the last one in monaghan at 2pm and im very happy with it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 79 ✭✭japjap

    Zabbo

It would be a temporary solution till I get a better system next year.

At the moment my current surround sound system has no surround sound inputs, only stereo. The PS3 only has optical out and HDMI. I would like a cheap system to have surround sound on the PS3.

    Thanks

Should have thought of that before shelling out on the breadmaker :)

No idea will this do what you want, i think you can return lidl stuff without much hassle, so many give that a go...

(or get a toslink to rca converter)

    Yup =)

    Does it do divx?

it does , it also says it supports xvid on the box with a little badge "xvid home"

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 468 ✭✭trap4

I'd never bothered with DivX before but now that this player supports it I've been exploring. Can anyone tell me if there are actually partner sites with movies / documentaries to rent / buy or is it all vapourware? Are there any DivX sites besides Stage6 ??

i got the last one in monaghan at 2pm and im very happy with it.

Ditto, very happy with my one. There was about a dozen left in the Lidl off the long mile road yesterday evening.

    Ps: There's also a Carlsberg promo which caught my eye :D 20btls @ 17.99

Very impressed myself, is it region free by default or do you have to apply a hack?

I hooked an external 360gb harddrive and it took 4 mins or so to read it but it played nicely from it!

My only small complaint is the stuttering movement on fast moving scenes, but for €60 I wont complain too much!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭vengeance52

    as previous post

    "open tray
    press 9 9 9 9
then 9 for region free ,or 1-8 for your desired region
    close tray
    done."

This works. i just done it on my player. plus i have a Hard Drive constantly hook to it now. :D

    Thanks for the reply.

well it was cos of this thread i bought one and im extremely happy with mine. was handy showing holiday snaps on the TV via memory card :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭vengeance52

Just to let those who bought one of these know, i was opening the cover for the USB/Memory stick inputs, and the cover just popped off in my hand, now it wont stay on when i open it, seems to be held in place with some sort of glue. well for €60 im not shocked, but just be warned, be gentle with it.

Hi, quick question re the DP-5400X DVD player.

When I connect a non powered notebook usb hd to it .. it just said DELL but didn't display any movies?

What type of usb hard drive do you attach to it? Is it a powered one ?

Also is it formatted as NTFS or FAT ?

Is there any secrets to getting this working .. would this one work http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.aspx?sku=324975

host powered devices are unlikely to work.

    Format as FAT32

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,713 ✭✭✭branners69

I have a 250gb harddrive in this, its a powered media enclosure but it bombed and wouldnt load as a media player which is why I bought the 5400 as it still worked as an external harddrive.

It took 2 mins to load up and I could play films and tv programmes no problem, its Fat32 but I thought I read in the 5400 manual that it can handle NTFS aswell?

I also have one of these but I havent tried it yet!

Best not try it now whilst that dancing programme is on or I'll be buried with the Lidl dvd!

Just tried the 500gb WD there and it didnt work!

You could try the Aldi one and if doesnt work bring it back to them as they have a great returns policy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,713 ✭✭✭branners69

Bad new, has to be FAT32 and under 128GB

Strange how my other external harddrive works fine and its 279gb?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,526 ✭✭✭vengeance52

    is it NTFS or FAT32?
