Installing OS X

    Hey guys,

I am wondering if it is possible for me to use my OS X 10.4 install disk I received with my Mini to install the operating system on an iBook. The version currently on the iBook is 10.3 and the new iPod(Classic) will not work with it.

I want to give the laptop to my sister so she can use it for her own iTunes library!

    Thanks
    Grudle

Although it is possible you can't do it unless you buy a copy of Tiger (10.4) for the iBook, as you need a license (i.e.: copy of OS X) for each machine you run the software on.
    2. Permitted License Uses and Restrictions.
    A. This License allows you to install and use one copy of the Apple Software on a single Apple-labeled computer at a time. This License does not allow the Apple Software to exist on more than one computer at a time, and you may not make the Apple Software available over a network where it could be used by multiple computers at the same time. If you use Setup Assistant to transfer software from one Apple-labeled computer to another Apple-labeled computer, please remember that continued use of the original copy of the software may be prohibited once a copy has been transferred to another computer, unless you already have a licensed copy of such software on both computers. You should check the relevant software license agreements for applicable terms and conditions. You may make one copy of the Apple Software (excluding the Boot ROM code) in machine-readable form for backup purposes only; provided that the backup copy must include all copyright or other proprietary notices contained on the original.

    Pretty much what Wiz said.

Most Apple machines ship with a machine specific copy of the OS these days, i.e. a MacBook comes with a MacBook install DVD, a Mini with a Mini Disc etc. The older machines and the Pro machines ship/shipped with generic install discs which can be used on any Apple machine. Also, when you buy a copy of the OS from a store for example, this is also a generic install DVD.

So in theory, if you DVD says "iBook" then its only going to work on an iBook. And, as Wiz pointed out, if this disc came with the machine, then you only have a Single User License and are therefore only permitted to install this on one machine.

You could probably pick up 10.4 pretty cheaply on eBay in light of the fact that 10.5 has just come out - in fact I have the generic version somewhere that I no longer use ...

In fact the disk should be capable of detecting the computer it has been inserted into and won't allow an installation to continue if its the wrong model.

Yeah, lol that was the point I was trying, very badly, to make! :)

Ok thanks for the help. Will do a search of ebay. Pity Apple don't sell previous OS versions. No way 10.5 will work on the iBook.
