Was watching tv here in Holland the other day, about 3 o'clock in the afternoon, and it took me a while to twig it, but the chat show i was watching was jam-packed with swear words, and the really naughty ones too, motherF'er this, f'ing that. I asked my Dutch friend about it, and she says they don't have any rules about when you can say what on tv here, they just curse whenever. This got me thinking back to Ireland and our 9pm watershed, and in some ways, maybe how stupid it is. I mean people around us curse non-stop, most curse words have pretty much lost any meaning or strength to shock, so what's the point in viewing them in some kind of false notoriety? Obviously there's a difference between straight up cursing and graphic descriptions of things, like a really graphic vocal description of sex or something, but regular swearing shouldn't be balked at in my opinion, and it's a bit stupid to hide children from it. And first one to link to that southpark where they say 'shít' loads is getting a boot up the hole.:D

It could be worse, at least we have a watershed. In America for instance, the level of censorship in is beyond rediculious. You can't swear at anytime of the day, on any channel, unless it's on a basic cable channel like FX/Comedy Central where 'sh!t' is probably the strongest thing you could get away with saying or premium cable like Showtime or HBO where you can pretty much do or say whatever you like.

Gerry Ryan tends to swear a lot on the radio if that's any help to you.;)

Radio is swear-city these days, you won't get away with several terms of abuse but plenty that 10 years ago would have had Outraged of Foxrock writing in are now normal. Not sure its any great advance forward mind you.

The watershed is fair and correct, my only gripe is that if its like after 11 pm it should be pretty much anything goes. Bring back the red triangle. ;)

    Mike.

It could be just me, but i can hear really nasty words on teh internet if i want, so i don't mind a few little sneaky nasty ones every now and then on tv:p. They had a policy like you suggested for after 11 over here, i think they still do, but recently they decided there was no point showing porn on tv, cause if someone wanted something dirty they could just use the internet or a dvd cabin or something, sexy wise tv over here is terribly disappointing:o

Is there a watershed in the UK? Something similar to here? It annoys me to no end that when watching any music channel after nine, the songs are still dubbed to get rid of the bad words

Also, I see nothing wrong with having a watershed here, it does keep some stuff off the telly that kids might otherwise see...

Yeah I found that weird when watching Dexter that they have curse words quite a bit.

Also the watershed is kinda irritating when watching that 70's show on mtv during the day and you hear red say "I'm gonna stick my foot up your ass". They block out ass, is it really that bad a word?

Not if the person owns a donkey... but then they'd get in trouble with animal rights groups.

Oddly TG4 seem to be showing South Park at 18.30... in Irish mind... But some of the content I wouldn't imagine would be suitable for broadcast at that time.

As far as I know they bleep stuff out.

I don't mind the watershed. I mean in my head it's usually kids shows till 5 or 6 on RTÉ 2 anyway where you don't really want cursing. Most of the good programmes are on after 9 but that suits me fine cos by the time I get home, eat something and sit down to watch TV it's usually 8 anyway.
I presume though if you said fcuk on some live show in the middle of the day you'd probably get away with it but do you really need/want to. Chat shows/game shows/kid shows/ soaps etc. don't need swearing as they make no addition to the shows. Whereas dramas, some more adult comedies and films might.

Can't really see a problem with the Watershed. 9 o'clock seems about right too.
If it was a free for all, it'd just open it up for idiots like Brendan O'carroll to use the word **** as his main joke

I hate the 9pm Watershed, it's so infuriating. It should be scrapped.
When you trawl through the TV listings just about anything half decent that adults may want to watch
is crammed in between 9pm and about midnight on pretty much all Irish & British channels.
Kids (under 18) programs are basically on all day until 9pm, and then adults (who pay the licence fee) have to make do with 3 hours or so.
Several programmes you would like to watch are on at the same time on different channels, so you have to sacrifice watching some.
Often there is a film you would like to see, but it is STARTING at 11.15pm and not over until the wee hours, which is a pain in the ass when you have to get up for work.

This thread is probably more relevant to 9 years ago when 'Adults' didn't have access to Netflix etc.

I'm with you there, Brian. I haven't watched any 'live' TV since the Euros.

Not everyone streams or downloads though.

I've a prob with beer ads pre watershed. Oh and those "bingo" gambling ads that are clearly aimed at children and designed to look like free game apps for children.
