I would like to run HT off a Mac rather than PC.... forget it?

What about connecting an external hard drive with DVDs directly saved to it through a DVD player?

I wouldnt go so far to say forget it, but your options are pretty limited. It also depends on weather you mean run on Mac hardware or on OSX.

The software is still at very early stages for a full-scale media centre on OS X.

Prettymuch on OS X you have Elgato Eye TV, front row and apple TV. Front row and apple TV are very unflexible so elgato is probably teh best overall option.

It you have an Intel Mac, you might be better off going the windows route.

No idea what you mean by this TBH!

I just mean that I can save the .vob s to a hard drive... can I then connect them to a dvd player?

Still don't quite get what you mean by connecting vobs to a DVD player. I think you mean play them on the Mac? Its usually a messy affair, unless you plan using a mouse.

You can play stored movies from a HD. How well it works and how integrated into the interface its going to be depends on the frontend you are using and the file format.

Sorry if I am not being clear... I think it is probably because I am barking up the wrong tree completely and what I am asking is not possible.... let me give it one more try....

DVD players (and I don't mean on a PC or Mac I mean a physical DVD player made by Philips or Sony or whoever) play movies from files that are stored on DVD discs. Those files are .vob s.

It seems to me that it should be possible for the DVD player to connect to the medium that stores the files if that is a hard drive rather than a DVD disc. The DVD player would have to accept the input from the hard drive... and there would hve to be some means of controlling selection of files, etc.

Are there any DVD players that have this type of capability? Is there some reason why this is not possible?
