[Tech Issue] Wifi and iPoker Help!

OK so theres been alot of discussion about iPoker and disconns here. I want to try and minimize these issues as they're costing me money. I have a wifi router downstairs and my PC upstairs. I am getting disconns about every 2 hours when online but when on iPoker its every 40 mins or so.

Is there a way to minimize this. I am very ignorant when it comes to wifi tech stuff. Can I get a better router to stop this or will I need to run a cable up to the PC? (not my preffered option as this will look like a mess.

    Any help would be appreciated..............

    Dave

just to add my problems with IPoker on wifi also.

I rarely get more than 20 minutes without being logged out, disconnected, being told I cannot log in because I am already logged in etc etc etc etc

i've lost several hundred on tournaments I bought into only yot be totally unable to play ahand in them due to ipokers failings.

I stopped playing on there permanently months and months ago. i haver never had any such problems on any other network. I long for a GJP return to Tribeca

When it comes to wireless its very hit and miss what could be causing the disconnection problems. If you have a cordless phone beside the wireless router, i would suggest moving this away from the router as they are knowing to cause interference with wireless. The other thing i would suggest looking out for is that when you lose connection is the DSL light flashing? if so its not a wireless issue at all.

I use wifi for my internet and it's pretty awful for IPoker.

From what I've read in other threads, it seems poker clients connections more resource heavy than say, browsing or downloading, as it's a continuous connection to various ports, which wifi doesn't seem to be the best at handling. Particularly Ipoker though. Happened much less when I was playing on FT.

I don't know if there's any better wifi solutions, but I'll be moving house soon enough and I'll be using a cable in the new place as I'm sick of the disconnections/signal drops/lags etc.

Get yourself a good wirless card, are you using a bog standard pci card?

I would rec. the asus usb wifi adapter. I played on wireless on ipoker for a good 2 months and rarely experienced connection issues bar when the dsl went down.

I think it's probably more an ipoker problem than a wifi problem. If you have good signal strength the connection between your pc and the internet via wifi (in my experience, maybe I'm lucky) should be quite stable. On the other hand I use ipoker on both my pc and laptop and suffer disconnects on both with equal regularity. I have complained to the online manager and always get the same it must be YOUR connection etc and if they hear you're using wifi then they can just wash their hands of you. It doesn't happen with any other sites to me only ipoker. I never lose connections to any non poker sites either, and when I get disconnected from ipoker everthing else works fine.

You see it on the site all the time players getting disconnected. TBH I think the HU SNG's are quite popular because of this added way you can win. Whatever way THEIR software connects to the internet needs to be re evaluated.

The best solution if you think you're about to disconnect is to close everthing down straight away and restart ipoker and at least your downtime will be quite minimal as it can sometimes take 3-5 mins before the software has decided it has lost the connection and tries to fix the problem ( I think this is the main problem they have ).

If you lose the connection take a snapshot of the screen with the strength of wireless application visible and the ipoker client lying that it can't connect as the computer is not connected to the internet..... Send it to the helpdesk and ask ( only really applicable to SNG's) for a refund... The few times it happened to me I got the entry fee back

I use 3 wireless for my connection. It's awful, iPoker disconnects at it's own discretion at least every 20 mins.

Stars doesn't disconnect as often, maybe 1 per hour, so I can only assume it's an iPoker issue.

The problem is not at ipokers end. I use wifi with iPoker, disconnects are extremely rare for me.

Been on GJP since august and am rarely disconnected. Sometimes I'm booted off all of my tables simultaneously, but it only happens infrequently and I can reconnect straight away. I'm in Dublin using eircom broadband on a wireless connection.

One good solution is to use homeplug power adapters. www.homeplugs.co.uk or try ebay, amazon etc. Thats what i use to link the floors in my internet cafe together without running CAT5. Works a treat :)

Dave, there is a simple way to isolate the WIFI component of this problem. Run a cable up (as you suggested) for a day or two and play away. It should be relatively clear then if thats the root of your problem.

To stop people from hosting permanent servers on DSL lines and other broadband connections some operators have enforce regular IP renewals in their routers. This has the effect of dropping your connection and rerequesting an IP from their central server. You're browser wouldnt notice this but your poker client will. Some poker clients are more sensitive then others to this.
Ask your operator if this is their policy (or ask on the Broadband forum here for an honest answer :) ) and demand they extend it to 24 hours if they are. Good luck with that but you are within your rights to insist.

    DeV.

Is this the router in my house (provided by the ISP) or one on their end. If on my end can I set myself. My ISP has notoriously bad cust service (but unfort the only isp here that always unlimited D/L)

    Sorry for the idiot questions.

this sounds like an excellent idea, I hadn't heard of these.

Otherwise just spend a day running a cable through the walls to the room in question, it is a pain in the ass but you only have to do it once.

This would be on the ISPs end.
