Built in MP3 encoder in WMP?

    Hi lads,

Just wondering is it worth my while encoding my CD collection on my new laptop in 128mbps MP3 directly through Windows Media Player?

(As in, rip the CD by using WMP and setting it to use MP3 as the codec to compress the music file, rather than WMA).

Is the MP3 bungled in with WMP any good or is old and poor with sound quality?

Any help would be great thanks!

There is a slider to increase the size if the file ie less compression. Personally i set it to 192kbps.

I've never had any problems with WMP's mp3 encoder, just up the quality of the rip... (obviously this will mean the mp3s take up more space)

    Ripped a few CD's last night. I used 128kbps for the CD's I "like" and 192kbps for CD's I "love" hahaha!

I'm paranoid about filling my hard drive even though the laptop is brand new and has 160GB of space.

I'd recommend LAME 3.97 and Foobar2000 (there's other programs that can use it too like CDex) - countless tests have shown LAME to be the best MP3 encoder around. -V2 --vbr-new is regarded the best setting (gives about 200kb/s) - more info here: http://wiki.hydrogenaudio.org/index.php?title=Lame

If you ever get an MP3 player with decent sound quality and/or good headphones you'll realise how crappy 128kb/s MP3s are - the iAudio 7 and Sennheiser CX300s did that for me...
