    Office 4.3 for Win3.11, Office 95 even Word 2.0a for 3.1 works.

It's the later offices that messes up earlier windows. I wouldn't install Office 2K on Win98 or Current Office on XP. It tends to update system files with strange results for older programs. Old office installs won't overwrite newer system files.

as an aside if you install more then over version of office or components of more than one version it's best to to them oldest first
if you have to install / reinstall / repair and older version then you should repair any later versions afterwards to fix files that the earlier version overwrote

if you have an exchange server the client access license allows you to use the latest version of outlook which may be different to your version of office or you may have got access or project separately

As an update on Capt'n's last point...
microsoft stopped providing that 'free' outlook cal with exchange 2007 CALS.

    http://www.informationweek.com/news/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=196800057

but I've seen it elsewhere on the MS site.

    Wonderful, just bleedin wonderful,
you have exchange 2003 and you can use outlook 2007
but if you upgrade to exchange 2007 you would have to drop outlook back to whatever version of office you have ???

I'll have to look into this I suppose

Just to say the most obvious; update as soon as you install as if you don't Office won't work as smoothly as you would like.

Turn on auto update for this and let XP do it itself.

Also get Office XP / 2003 / 2007 readers from microsoft website so that you won't have problems reading doc or xls from other people or the web.

    Good luck with it

Don't forget that http://update.microsoft.com does NOT work with office 2000
for it goto http://officeupdate.microosft.com and the link is in the top left - you are looking for other office
