I've been asked by my friends bridesmaid to do her a favour and take a photo of the bride & groom outside the hotel for the reception menu card. She wants to do it as a little surprise which is why she asked me (rather than the photographer). Just wondering if I'll be able to upload the photo to the hotels PC without installing the EOS software first? Anyone know?

Also, while I'm at it, some advice about taking the picture would be great!! I feel under a bit of pressure now to get a nice one and all I have is the kit lens and a nifty fifty. Considering it could be cold and overcast tomorrow, any advice about settings??

You'll be able to transfer images without the software being installed yes (definitely on XP anyway).

Try to have a little scout around to find the ideal spot spot to place the bride & groom and frame the shot in your mind, also an good idea to set your ISO and white balance before you start, less things to worry about... also if the hotel is going to be using it, might be an idea to shoot RAW+JPEG, could be doubtful if they'll have the required software to handle RAW.

Thanks for the advice. Good idea about shooting in RAW & jpeg. I might bring my laptop just in case and then I could just transfer the image to their PC by email or USB

If it was me I'd take a close up of the bride and grooms face with the nifty fifty using aparture priority at f1.8 to get a really good DOF. Obviously if they are a pair of mingers a longer distance and tighter aparture would be better :D

:D No, they are both very good looking so I think a close up with a good DOF would be a good option. Thanks for that!
I don't actually know much about the white balanace settings so any idea what these should be? Will be about 3.30-4pm I'm guessing so it will be getting dark!

Just shoot as many photos as you can in the time allowed with a few different settings, change ISO and use program mode for some as well as manual mode. try flash and no flash. just a trick I use sometimes is to take shot with night setting and no flash. Try it and see.

To upload photos from camera to any computer running XP,(connect camera to pc with USB cable and switch camera on ) go to "my computer" and you should see camera as a drive, click on it and follow until you see photos. go to view and select thumbnails and hey presto, choose which fotos to upload. I bet you already knew how to do it anyway. Good luck with the photo shoot tomorrow.

I'd go for a cardreader just to be safe :)

I brought my laptop. Had to get a shot in the church coz it was raining and only had one shot at it as they were doing the hugging and hand shaking at the time :) Then I got into the car and uploaded the photo to the laptop on the way to the hotel. Then I just copied it onto a USB key and brought that to the girl in the hotel. Was all very rushed and I don't think it was the best shot of them but they seemed happy with it anyway
