Yeah, spent a week in Sorrento around April time a few years back. Depends what you're looking for I guess. It's a great spot to base yourself as you can hit Naples, Pompeii, Mt Vesuvius to one side and Positano, Amalfi coast from the other, with Capri an option across the bay as well. Plenty to do nearby. The town itself is pretty enough but very touristy, very English in parts, and quite expensive as Italy goes, for food, drink, etc. Beach wise it aint great either.

yes was there in January of 2005, beautiful part of Italy, lovely town and the surrounding Amalfi coast is awesome. you are only about 30 minutes away by train from mount Vesuvius and Pompeii and a 15 minute boat trip from the wonderful isle of Capri (which should not be missed). we actually stayed in Sant'Agnello about a 15 minute walk from the centre of Sorrento in a hotel on the cliff over-looking the amazing bay of naples.

there is a nice beach near sorrento at Meta which can found by travelling on the orange bus line A, don't bother with Naples which is about 1 hour by train, horrible city

I just went there for a day trip, was staying in Portici. Lovely scenery, but the lack of a beach was a bit of a bummer. We went to this Roman ruins that was built into the rocks along the coast... was great exploring the area, climbing along the rocks, etc. Got some great pics of waves smashing against the walls and splashing up on us :) Had a nice meal in a very primitive restaurant RIGHT on the coast... you could spit into the sea from it, like (not that you'd want to...). Was very nice to look across the sea at the mountains, whilst eating penne marinara :)

The town is very touristy though...

Also don't forget to go to Capri! We wanted to go, but was too expensive (think about €25 return) for most of the people I was there with so didn't go. Ahh well

Very nice place, was there about a month ago and even then the weather was fantastic.

As it's been said, make sure you visit Capri and get the bus up to Anacapri where you can get a chair-lift to the top of the island and enjoy one of the nicest views around. The Amalfi drive and climb to the top of Vesuvius with Pompeii/Herculaneum are obviously well worth a trip too.

Avoid Naples though, it's a dump.

Sorrento itself is expensive enough, can be quite busy too (motorcyclists everywhere!) Not really the place to go if you're looking for wild night life, though it has lots of nice restaurants.
