    hello,

i was trying to work out if it was worth my while to invest in a wind turbine. but the calcualtions seem a bit crazy. Anyone good at this? i have read some of threads in the wind turbine thread. saw where some people had the payback in them. this is what i did

turbine (proven 6kW@ 5m/s) gives me 6kW a year gives me 990 euro a year.
annual spend 1130 euro a year
    cost of turbine 28000 euro
    discounted at 4%
    infilation at 10 %
    no annual maintanence
    payback is the 11th year

have i underrating the turbine or what ?? any help would be great. i would like to help the earth and have it pay for itself.

    Holdfast

I think it's fair to say that unless you have a very good source of hydro, you are unlikely to find a justification for small-scale alternative energy on purely economic criteria. The simple fact is that if you have access to mains electricity then it's a financial no-brainer. If you are in a remote area without access to grid power your calcs will be very different, obviously.

Of course, you may want to go ahead anyway:

    - to educate yourself.
    - to minimise your use of non-renewables.
    - to have a backup supply.
    - simply because you can. :)

As for the capital investment, well, I don't know about you, but I have justified spending money on all kinds of things that I didnt really "need".

Have you considered the homebrew option?
