Under-paid for 14 months

I have just discovered today that I have been underpaid by my employer for the last 14 months, today I was paid the outstanding amount along with my monthly salary.

As it stands if I had been paid correctly for the previous 14 months, I would have only paid a minimal amount of tax as I never earned more than my monthly tax-free allowance.

however whilst examining my payslip there was a deduction of nearly €1000 for PAYE & PRSI, this was nearly a quarter of the gross pay, which i know isnt a hughe amount, but if i had been paid propperly this would never have been deducted.

Where do I stand with regards claiming this amount back?

At the end of the tax year, ring revenue and ask them for a balancing statement (P21). You should get any outstanding tax due back then.

Does the balancing statement take account for previous financial years?

You may be better off querying it with revenue over the phone. The only issue you have here is that 3 of the months you were unpaid for, fell into last year's tax jurisdiction. Taking the tax off for a huge payment is normal - it will readjust itself next month.

On the other hand, because it was a bulk "adjustment", it may not matter that three of the months were last year because you received the income this year.

You can get a balancing statement for the previous 3 years.
