    Hey
Just a quick question that I hope brings some results...

Whats the best way to improve your poker play?

I've tried reading books and that but for whatever reason I just can not push myself to finish em! So besides books any other ways....

    Cheers :D:):D

if you're playing online, get PokerTracker and record your play

then, after each session, go through your hands and see if you can find your leaks. It'll be the best $50 you ever spent...

Also post some hands up for discussion here and get some free advice form the most talented group of poker players in the world!

What games do you play? Multi table tournaments, sit and goes (1 table tourneys) or cash games? I'm presuming you play NL hold 'em.

Firstly as with everything in life, practice makes perfect so possibly the best thing you can do, providing you already have a decent grasp of the game, is to play as much as you can. Even if you are making stupid mistakes you will soon realise what you are doing consistantly that is losing you money, you start doing this on a subconscious level also, this is often your "gut instinct".

If you are playing cash games online, ie. games where you can join and leave whenever you want and where the blinds don't change. I reccommend getting pokertracker and playing ten thousand hands then post up your stats on here. People will analyse them for you and its a good way to get a quick overview on how you are playing. Eg. Are you too loose or too tight? Are raising enough, are you calling too much? Are you using position to your advantage etc.

If you are still a relative beginner and you don't want to read a book about poker I would reccommend trying to get hold of some videos of good players playing poker at low limit levels online, they talk through what they are thinking and new and experienced players tend to learn a lot through this. PM me and I might be able to send you a link to one if you want.

I'm actually going home to watch some myself which I got off my american cousin.

the best single way to improve is to get coaching

I don't think this is good advice in poker...practice makes permanent! ie, you'll get into bad habits that will be very hard to unstick.
You won't improve @ poker simply by practising, you have to review hands and spend about the same time working on your game as you do playing.

I agree that reviewing hands etc is very important but reviewing hands is pointless unless you are playing a decent number of hands in the first place.
Imo there is no substitute for experience in poker. If you are playing lots and still losing you are going to make some changes...

    Finish the BOOKS :D

I found a massive improvement in my game after reading one I was given. Plus I got coached too, which helps alot. I knew the basics and knew the good hands to play etc etc, but after reading a book I learned more about position and that even a hand I thought I would play wasnt good in that position with the action that went before it. And the poker math too, a subject I was good at anyway was math, and it does help.. although not everyone will agree!

    Good luck!

i think you should get the poker tracker its like playing in the dark without it...100% value for money

It is a great tool davidgti, but to say its like playing in the dark without it is a bit much.

I think people do make mistakes by concentrating too much on your opponents pokertrackerstats. That said it is a great investment and your money is returned to you tenfold through making better reads with the help of it.

yes agree with you 100% bud.i made lots of mistakes with it too my trouble was opening too many tables at once + playing ABC poker.so i think if you limit yourself with tables you should be fine.

play a tournament where you're not allowed limp or call... has to be raise or fold. you'll pay much more attention to what your opponent has and where you are in a hand.

    Understand position.
Understand Cards to be played with position.
Realise the poker gods have to be smiling at you to take good pots.
Get a decent grasp of pot/bet sizes (Thats where others mention maths but I am crap at maths)
Don't take it to bad when some sh1t head hits a runner runner with cards you learned to ditch after you learned the top two.

And if it is online poker... pay attention....

    Best of luck!

oh and lean to fold :(

  • Re:Pokertracker.

I'm only a micro stakes player, and was very interested in getting pokertracker after reading so much about it on here, but was sceptical about spending €50 on a piece of software when I've only ever deposited €60!

Anyway, I found, with google, a site that gives you pokertracker as a bonus when you clear 50 partypoints (about 1000 raked hands).

Even at micro stakes, and not multitabling, it should take you no time at all to clear the bonus (min deposit $50).

I also got pokerace HUD free aswell..
