Is your computer connected to the Internet and just displaying the error when you try to download AVG? Or is it not connecting to the Internet at all?

You could try clearing out your LMHOST file ( just highlight and delete the contents) ... Located here C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc if you have XP installed. ( Do a Backup of the original first ;-) )

    This may resolve your prolbem...

Or you could download the AVG installer on another computer, put it on a memory stick, and then transfer it over to the computer that you want it on.

When i close one window now this msg also appears and then it closes all the windows that are open, e.g. say if im reading a page here on boards and i open a link that someone has posted it opens grand but then when i close the link it will say internet explorer has stopped working, then it says windows is checking the problem or something to that effect, and then it just closes all the windows i have open. I then have to re-open internet explorer and it a annoying circle of opening and closeing.
This only started since i deleted Norton with that tool, anybody have any ideas please!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay let me stick with you on this one..

When IE is open, can you tell me what version it is? Go to Help -> About. Might start with upgrading versions if its using an old one.

When you launch Internet Explorer, your able to view pages okay. However, if you close a window all of the windows closed and Windows gives you an error, correct? Can you quote me, exactly the error that appears?

Just trying to find out exactly the story before we start talking about fixing it up.

    Hey sully,
Im in work at the moment, when i get home this eve ill post all the info you need, thanks for the help, i just dont wanna have to give it into a shop where they'll charge me a fortune to fix something i could have probly done myself(with some advise:D), again thanks i'd really appriciate if you can help me.

Sounds like your Internet Explorer is a bit broken. As Sully said check the version. If it's below version 6 you seriously need to upgrade. If it's version 6 you can try upgrading to version 7 via Microsoft Update, that might fix the problem. If not, try downloading Firefox or Opera. They've given me a lot less grief than Internet Explorer and would certainly recommend you give one of them a try.

    Hey,
Thanks for the help still r, i tried to download firefox but the same msg keeps appearing and then shuting all windows i have open.

To answer sully's questions earlier, its IE 7.0 im useing,

What exactly happens is, when i close a window a little box pops up in the middle of the screen and says "Internet Explorer has stopped working, windows is checking for a solution to the problem",

Then that box closes and another small opens saying " Internet Explorer has stopped working, A problem caused the program to stop working correctly, windows will close the program and notify you is a solution is availible".
And then when i close that box all the windows close.

Hope you can help me with this.
    Thanks.
    Vinnie.

Sounds like the IE7 installation is corrupted, or something has happened to cause it to crash all the time.

If you can't keep it open long enough to try downloading something, I'd try going somewhere with a USB key and downloading the installer there, and trying to uninstall and reinstall.

I've 2 things you can try:

1: In Internet Explorer go to Tools|Internet Options and go to the Advanced tab. At the bottom there will be a button labelled Reset. Click that, it might fix the problem.

    2. If that doesn't work go to C:\Windows\System 32\ and find cmd.exe. Right click on that and select "Run as administrator". Once it's open type (without quotes) "sfc /scannow". That'll do a scan and fix all system files that aren't working right.

    Hope it helps!

There may also be a program that's running at Start up that's conflicting with IE. Try going to Start/run, type MSCONFIG, when the System Configuration Utility opens, goto the Startup Tab, Click Disable All, Apply and OK. You will have to Restart your PC and when it boots back up it will tell you that you are using an edited startup, Click the Radio Button and Ok.

Now try using the Internet again and see if you can open a page.

If not can you tell us the processes that are running, You can view these by Right-Clicking on your Taskbar and going to Task Manager, Click on Processes and then on CPU to arrange by usage, let us know what processes are running.

You might also want to check your event log to see if there are any errors. You can do this by Right_clicking My Computer, Goto Manage. Expand the Event Viewer, and click on Application. See if there are any errors pertaining to your problem, If not try clicking on system and check the errors there.

Let us know what you find.

Id imagine if Norton was running, it would of picked up something suspicous. Im getting an indicated of a messed up IE7 install, possibly due to the way Norton ties itself in with it. Clearly, the uninstall didnt go to well for IE7. I think you need to re-run the installer filer and do a repair on the install.

Scan Disk, well.. I cant see that helping much with this issue. Always good to run though.

Im getting an indicated of a messed up IE7 install,
Yeah I'd imagine this is the case. This should fix your problem OP

Go here and download this program to your desktop
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Dial-a-fix.shtml

Extract it to it's own folder and double click "Dial-a-fix". When it runs go to the hammer symbol at the bottom called Tools and click that. Then click on "Repair/reinstall IE" and click Go.

That should hopefully fix your problem.
