my brother is big into anything to do with cars, so for xmas I'm looking to get him a selection of good car chase films, I just want some advise.

    I am thinking:

    Vanishing Point
Gone In 60 Seconds(1974) (he has the remake)
The Italian Job (not sure to get the original or remake)

I'm looking for more suggestions, he already has the three Fast & The Furious films

Beaten to Ronin aswell. How about the first 2 Mad Max films? Die Hard With A Vengeance? Maybe even Smokey and the Bandit?

    +1 Ronin, Bourne Identity

Also: Blues Brothers - didn't it have the biggest/longest/most expensive car chase ever?

Also: Bad Boys 2: Not a great film, but excellent car chase.

    Another one for Ronin

There is no remake of the Italian Job, just a crap film with the same name

    Bullit is the dogs bollix

Road Warrior had better car scenes than the original Mad Max IMO

That said, it sounds like your brother likes the modern crap, not the classics.

I can't believe it took 11 replies before The French Connection got mentioned! It isn't like the modern car chases, as the car mostly just has to go in a straight line, but it is packed full of drama and tension. It is quite clear that it is Gene Hackman behind the wheel too.

Batman Begins is the only one I can think of that has yet to be suggested. It was really noisy. The quality of a car chase should be measured in decibels; noisy chases being the best. Damn, that new Batmobile was slick.

It probably won't be released by Christmas, but Deathproof is worthy of consideration. I was somewhat let down by the film, but that chase (if you can call it that) was cool.

All the other good chase films that I can thinkl of have already been mentioned. I particularly love the Blues Brothers chase; it is simply ludicrous. Why do all those cop cars just flip over without hititng anything? And who were the cops shooting at when they got out of their cars? Surely Jake and Elwood were specs in the distance by then? Maybe they were trying to get rid of all the witnesses.
Another reason I love that scene: it takes place on Lower Wacker drive!

Surprised nobody else mentioned this. The entire film is a car chase. Plus it's hilarious.

The chase in thee French Connection is good but the one in the Seven-Ups is better, you may have a job finding it on DVD though.

Actually, it isn't a car chase per se, but Dash is fleeing through the jungle from the quasi-helicopter mounted henchmen in the Incredibles is what I think to be the greatest chase ever. Honestly. The moment when Dash laughs as he realizes that he's actually able to run on water was truly brilliant.

yeah considering the year threw up such turkeys as The godfather part 2, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Chinatown and the Taking of the Pelham. Believe it or not they could actually make films back then:rolleyes:

As for effects the 70's were the time for car movies. Everything you see was actually being doing...and it shows through in the sheer excitement....you can feel the speed.

Take it any day of the week over keanu Reeves sitting in a static car in front of a big green screen.

    What about over-hyped Death-Proof?
    Blues Brothers for me, anytime.

Well, BMX Bandits, there is car chase! Car is chasing guys on BMXs, however it's funny as hell. Not to mention that it is Nicole Kidman's first movie.

By the way, Matrix is only one.

I liked Deathproof. sure it could have done with being an hour or so shorter, but it wasn't meant to be the size we saw it. the chase scene between the Deathproof car and the dodge challenger was brilliant I thought

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,699 ✭✭✭ThOnda

Car chase? It is hard to do with american cars that can only go straight. That is what happened to Deathproof. Good sound, good camera, but the chase is boring. But that is only my opinion.

French TAXI shows more driving, and I mean proper driving, and all those Taxi movies are only comedies.

Thats the whole point of the movies.

There is nothing like the site of a 1970 dodge challenger tail out tyres screeching skidding around a corner.

Yank cars from the 70's may have been pieces of **** to drive but they were made for the big screen.

I enjoyed the Sugarland Express. Slowpaced chase movie but a chase movie nonetheless. You might as well have a look at "Duel" whilst we're on the subject.

    I would go with

    Vanishing Point,

    french connection,

    Bullitt,

    Ronin,

    the bourne identity/supremacy

    or top of the list

'To Live and Die in LA'.
