No photography in Trinity...

Has anyone heard of this recently. The husband was going through there today with his camera and one of the security guys came up to him and said photographs weren't allowed with decent cameras because of copyright infringement issues.

Anyone encountered this? It seems ludicrous when you consider it's one of the biggest tourist attractions in town.

I was over in Belgium at the weekend and seen some nice shots of old coal mine lifts and when I took a shot a security guard came over and told me I couldnt take any pictures so I told him that they didnt have a copyright on the sky and to stop bothering me. Thats bad with Trinity.

They won't let you take a picture of the the "hand" in the grounds of the Dept of Education in Marlborough Street either. The security guy says its because its government property. Our taxes and his paid for it.

This crap is spreading like a cancer and its total nonsense anyway. I just bought a 10mp Lumix for work that looks like a p&s but takes pretty much pro quality shots so its ridiculous that some gorilla thinks 'if it has a big lens it must be pro'.

Apart from the fact that I, as a taxpayer, bought and paid for every stone in that sodding place anyway

I was in Trinity last Fri and took loads of photos. No one said anything to me.

    Weird.

This wasn't about the Book of Kells was it?
I vaguely recall something about not being allowed to take high res shots of the book lest it be copied.

i work there and carry a camera around with me every day, never had a problem. there's also a billion people with SLRs wandering around.

the security guys there are on a power trip and they're really, really bored. nothing more to it.

Total crap, unless he was trying to take pics of the Book of Kells in the Long Room.

Even then, I doubt the book of kells still has copyright on it!!:D

its not quite as simple as it may sound

by law, if you are on a persons property, they are allowed to request you dont take photographs

also the copyright thing, where additions have been added to a building for example. even though the copyright might of expired on the building, because of the additions the person doing the addition now has copyright. thats why there is an electrician who own the copyright to the eiffiel tower at night

    ^ very true.

Many people don't realise that Trinity is private property. Even the Gardai could be refused entry without a warrant (technically).

But they probably couldn't get you to delete the pictures you've already taken, if you take anymore then you become a trespasser and could potentially (highly unlikely) be arrested and sued for damages (or at the very least get an injunction against you preventing you from entering Trinity with a camera ever again.)

On the other hand...storm in a teacup :)

Weird.. I was just there tonight thinking I must come back with my tripod and do some night shots.. I'll give it a go anyway

Well there are no signs up saying no photography - so you can shoot for as long as they don't tell you to stop.

then a week later they thought i was a terrorist , private security firms are a Dublin photographers nightmare

Good to hear the porters in Trinity are still as bone headed as ever

Just to set the record straight, you are allowed to take photos in trinity, but if you want to use a tripod you have to apply for a permit which can be gotten very easily from the enquiries office I believe.

As for the security guys, they often hassle students too without any reason other than the desire to feel important and alleviate there own boredom...

If any security guard tells you to stop taking photos (without a tripod, with one you will need a permit) tell him you asked at the enquiries office and they sauid it was okay, and that the may at there pleasure place the lens of your camera up...

Not just students. When I was working there in the early 90's there was a notorious one whose personal fiefdom was the O'Reilly building down on Westland Row. I actually overheard him tell an official looking visitor attempting to go through a normal looking door that "Dat door is neider an entrance nor an exit". I don't think I ever came across a non sociopathic porter in my time there, they must have a special training course for them or something.

I worked security one summer and I can say that it is the most mind numbingly boring job in the world where any excuse to be a total twat is to be savoured and the expense of others.

Night shots of the eiffel tower are not allowed (although not policed)
But day shots are fine as they are public domain.
It has little difference on public photos, but it matters if the show was to be included in a film or similar,
i imagine the same applies to trinity, they shouldn't bother with public photos, but any filming on site wouldn't have to pay for the rights,
Security guard just on a power trip, although, possibily legally or technically correct

Haha! In college the past two weeks we've had to take photos of Trinners and there was SO much hastle as we were all using tripods, but as was already said in the thread, once you get the permit you're grand!
