    no, but it helps. you'll lose some visual fidelity without being in "high def" mode, but you'll still see a jump in graphics from ps2

    I'm using my PS3 on Panasonic 32" 100Hz CRT and I think it looks great. Like every and even HD, it depends on the quality of your TV.
    Ratchet & Clank, Uncharted look really great even in SD.

    Ive a 40" Bravia that I bought last week, haven't got my HDMI cable yet but it already looks great. Can't wait to see the difference the HD makes.

    you don't need one but there is a big difference in quality if you have it hooked up to one.
