Are there apprenticeships for it or is usually a family business type thing ? :o

Well, you could start by teaching yourself. Theres a few good books on it. Check out stewmac.com they sell all the tools and the books. Other alternatives are luthier schools, there are a few (literally) of these in the world. I know of one in the States (think it could be in NY state.).

I built a bass with Bailey Guitars :

    http://www.baileyguitars.co.uk

They run a guitar building course.

I know there is another builder in England who started there.

But there's more to being a luthier then just building a guitar. There's repair, maintenance etc.

Apprenticing might be the best way to go. Or just trying it all yourself.

You could contact some of the luthiers listed in the stickies above and see how they started, or offer to help for free to learn some basics.
