Wireless Connection Problem - Help Please

We have IOLBB DSL. However, the setup we had needed a very long cable, which was resulting in intermittent performance issues. After speaking with a technician we were presented with the choice of getting an ethernet cable that was long enough, or using wireless. We decided to go with wireless.

The set up we have at the moment is a wireless router providing a network for the home PC and my laptop, with the original DSL modem serving as a bridge.

However, the connection is not what it should be, I think we're getting packet loss. Browsing is occasionally slow, download speeds are 25%-50% what they should be, and online games suffer periodic lag spikes.

Two things that might be causing problems:
    - The router is quite far away from the PC, we're getting 50-70% signal strength, I don't know if that could be a problem.
    - Our neighbour has a wireless connection that is registering at 100%. When it popped onto the radar our connection went to complete shit. Theirs is channel 7, ours was 11. I changed ours to channel 1 in the hopes of reducing interference, and I thought that had solved the problem but maybe not.

Any advice you can offer would be greatly appreciated.
