I have pm'ed an SMod so hopefully it will be fixed asap.

My favourite place outside Dublin is definitely the Cue Club. Had a deadly laugh down there in a great club with great atmosphere, nice staff and well managed.

I would've gotten away with it if it wasn't for your pesky efficiency.

I have no doubt that the SE is a great cardroom but the rigid closing at 6 forcing tournaments to chop and the completely random closing with little/no advance warning for private functions would make it a lot closer for me.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,080 ✭✭✭HiCloy

Also not opening earlier than 6 for bigger tournaments, but still my choice

CHL for me because I like Luke

No way the SE deserves it. They don't give a shít about poker in there. I mean closing the card room whenever they like, and closing at 6am. Atmosphere is dead in there compared to somewhere like the fitz which has always had the best atmosphere imo.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,286 ✭✭✭✭mdwexford

I disagree big time, they were the first club to put on a top notch structured monthly game and came on here and asked opinions on it and really listened to what players said. The dealers are all top notch, Alex and John are both really good at their job and are on here a lot to let people know whats going on and stuff unlike the Fitz who didnt even know the structures for their festival till like a week before it, tables, chips, tv's, etc everything is quality all the way in there.

I also only noticed now the Macau is not even nominated which is ridiculous as its definitely the second best Poker Room in the country imo, the only place that compares to the SE.

I think they do and they got my vote. Both Alex & John have made every effort to improve the poker floor over the last year and have succeeded in almost every aspect in my opinion. It's not their fault that circumstances out of their control mean they have to close at 6 and have the floor closed on some occasions. It’s as frustrating for them as it is for us especially considering the effort they put in.

I think people are always going to have different preferences. I'm not much of a fitz fan and have never particularly enjoyed playing in there. I'm sure it’s the same with many who frequent the Fitz when they play in the SE or other clubs.

the SE and the Macau. are you on crack? I can't see why the SE is getting so much love, yes they have good staff but they don't put the players first.

the SE and the Macau for me also - my 2 fav spots to vist by far

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,092 ✭✭✭Glowingmind

I went for the Sporting Emporium.

I'm primarily a tournament player, and I don't think any of the dublin clubs come close on that front. (I think CHL's has the best structures, and if they start getting bigger fields then i'll likely play more regularly)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 290 ✭✭mickste

not putting the players first.lol seroiusly. bar the sudden closures that happen infrequently, this statement is wrong. Alex and John who are in charge of the card room , do everything they can to put the players first.

    well said Mick.

John and Alex are top shelf.

I think what RT is saying is that the restricted hours and sudden closures a few times a year of the poker room only (if the gaming floor is closed then I stand corrected) shows that it is not designed to be poker player friendly on a par with the other games.

I don't think anyone can deny that John and Alex do an absolutely fantastic job within the limits they are set, but it is these limits that should not exist in the first place to be honest.

The fact that it is a rare occasion when poker is important enough to allow early opening or late closing shows how far down the overall SE powers rate the poker room.

Yeah....Just wondering why the Macau is not nominated for this...I've only played the festival events so can't comment on weekly tourneys etc...but IMO it's a fine establishment...really well finished cardroom and enjoyed myself everytime i've been in...

There's a great buzz in the Fitz....gets ya going the minute ya walk in (or used to anyway..haven't been in much lately)...

S.E is really well finished and I agree they have put on some really good tourneys and the guys in there run a good ship imo....

Hope Lukes place is up there but maybe they need another year to establish themselves as a front runner....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,438 ✭✭✭jbravado

Alex and john do a first class job no doubt but the way poker players have been treated by the place itself is far from perfect.Im very suprised that the regulars are putting their heads in the sand about this!

The complaintS about the atmophere are beyond farcical coming from ppl ho NEVER/RARELY play there.

EDIT JUST READ 5STARS POST AND HE SPEKY THE ENGLI BETTER THAN ME.

Everybody will have their favourites but ive enjoyed every cardroom ive played in this year. The standard of service in Ireland is generally poor imo but cardrooms seem to be the exception. I never seem to see or pick up on staff who work in cardrooms that dont really want to be there so each cardroom is commended in my book.

Would like to get a vote in for Fitzpatricks, Limerick but I can't.

    Please sort out the poll!

I voted SE but I do agree the Macau deserved at least a nomination, the place has been good to me :D

People need to stop going on about this, if they didn't see fit to nominate them in the first place then it's your own fault for them not being nominated. It's too late now. In future if people want someone nominated, then nominate them yourself.

I voted for the K+K card club. They were more or less the opposite of the SE: a very small place that (at least when I was there) had very friendly management did everything to make its players happy. I might have voted for the Fitz but I understand there has been a change of personnel since I was there last. I haven't played in Luke's. My second choice would have been the Jackpot.

I've played in the SE 10-12 times, though I haven't been there in a while. I always thought the atmosphere was crap, the players were all up their own arses, and the casino management saw poker players as a very low priority. I agree the poker staff are among the best and most skilled in Ireland.

I havent been to the fitz for a long time. The last time I went was for some end of the month tournament. We played 11 handed for a while, it was cramped noisy and the structure was terrible for what was quite an expensive tournament. I basically gave up offline poker after that for a while. Then a while later I ended up going to the SE a few times, and it was the direct opposite. Disregarding everything else, the structure of their regular tournaments was hugely better than anywhere else, and imo directly lead to the other casinos getting their act together a bit. Also the dealers and the staff are all uniformly excellent there, which isnt always the case. They also never had the show one show all rule!

I was in the cue club last week and it deserves a mention. I played the €200 mtt which was well run and had a better structure than any tournament ive played in dublin. I would definitely consider voting for this but for the fact that its so far away from me.

If the Cue Club was closer to a lot of those who voted in this pole it would be near the top in my opinion. As it is they have an impressive number of votes. Excellent set up.

The most annoying thing for me about the fitz is the tournanment chips and the way you have to jump over people to get your seat. The food is a big plus.

There are new tournie chips in the last month (unless those are the ones you are referring to), and the expansion in a couple of months will take care of the crampedness, which I agree with tbh.
