    If you change your avator why does it change on your old posts ?

    What an odd word - avator.

    It's avatar.

    Traditionally it was the human or animal embodiment of a god....

    On the internet it's a graphic that represents a user.

    Yep, it's the same with your sig.

    It's avatar

    Little know fact: "Avatar" was forced to change its name due to copyright issues. Combining the words "Savage" and "Avatar", the band arrived with Savatage.

    boards pages aren't stored on the server in the format you see, they're generated each time. for example, it doesn't store (simplified and mostly made up):
    cazzy

    registered user

    this is my post

    cazzy's sig

    it stores something like:
    usernumber=1234

    registered user

    postnumber=1818181818

    signature=sig(usernumber) <---that line gets the current signature for the above user

    and it queries the database for that info each time

    its all very technical :p

    because each thread is generated from a database subject to a query for the user... there would only be one entry for your avatar, and when you change it the results from each query would change...

    forums aren't like your average site when everything is a static html page...

    Edit: Vimes beat me too it. and a better explanation too.... i'll go crawl in a hole and die now.
