Bought 3 of these today, it's a great price for a reasonable freeride board and solid adjustable bindings. There were only 6 in the first store I tried and I had to travel to another store to get 2 160's, well worth the hassle though.
They sold them back in March for 150 each.
Will give it a burn in the new year and report back on quality in case they come up again as things do with lidl.
3 year warranty also by the way.

    ummm.. dunno.

Last year bought a reasonably cheap set off the net. Biggest problem i had was the bindings were very very poor. Changed the bindings and suddenly I could snowboard.

Had a look at the Lidl snowboards, bindings seem very flimsy. But just my inexpert opinion.

The bindings are rock solid IMO, far more substantial than my burton ones from a few years ago. The acid test will be trying them out I guess but I'm reasonably confident. My main worry tbh would be the durability of the (wood) core, it'll be interesting to see how it holds up to jumps etc.

okay.. can see where this is going...

Hmmm good price, I'd be tempted just so I could fling myself around snowparks without worrying...but bringing one snowboard is a balls in itself, never mind two :)

Take off the bindings from both and slip one into the other, only pay for one ;)

Air, where did you get the 160 boards ? I have just been and all they had were 153 boards. I was told the 160 boards werent stocked in any Lidl! Bought two 153 boards though, may return them...

    Thx

    Hi,
Yep there seems to be a shortage of 160 for sure, I went to Listowel first and they were all 153 bar one 145 which I bought, went to Newcastlewest and they had two 160s both of which I bought. I havent been to any other stores.but I'd imagine they thought most people would be the "medium" size, not realising that most male adults (primary snowboard using population) would need 160s
There wasnt anyone else buying the boards in either of the stores I was in though so you might be lucky if you check around.

they still had loads of 153's when i was in lidl in ballinteer this evening but the bindings look like they would break very easily

I have 2 160's from last year that i got for me and my mate at €150 a piece. They did the job fine. I'm planning on long weekend trips this season so it's not really feasible hauling the boards each time. If anyone is interested I'd sell them one. Board bag included.

Open to offers, feel free to PM for photos etc if you want to check the condition.

It's a noodle! Much too soft to be considered a freeride board, the bindings look uncomfortable.

I'm sure it would not be a bad board to learn on but you'd outgrow it quickly. Generally boards that are this soft are very unstable at any kind of speed and I can't imagine it being very responsive or giving any kind of feedback.

Yeah they are very soft but in fairness the rating on the package does rate it at only 2/10 for alpine

lads seriously... you will get a better quality rental then that Lidl board... i was lookin at one last yr up in kilternan(someone brought one up). the bindings do look uncomfortable.. not a spec of paddig.. they look flimsey and id say the clasp will give way.

The board itself, Quoating someone else here. "there is more pop in a wet noodle!!!". it looks cheap id say it rides cheap.. (actually reminds me of an old girlfriend.. never mind!!)
as far as learning on it.. thats just useless.. if you want to progress past basic turns then its crap!!

and for the guy who bought 3.. you could have got a brand new rome solution and bindings for that price on the net...

cant believe so many of you guys are on this bandwagon:confused:

what an absolute load of muppets.

you bought three of these things?

    are you nuts?

you'd want to be stupid to buy a snowboard from LIDL of all places!

Come on lads, you guys use the internet.. there are bargains to be had on quality gear if you search for more than 20 minutes.

    Hi Guys,
Just to follow up on this, I used the board for a week in Slovakia over the winter.
I was pretty happy with it and it suited me nicely as the bindings allow it to be set up neutrally so that I flick from normal to goofy mid run with no difference in balance.
My girlfriend also used hers to learn and had no problems.
On the downside, I took a kick at high speed on the 2nd last day and landed hard, nose into a heavy drift and the board stuck solid. The plastic disc that bolts to the board broke, letting my leg free.
Now I'm told these shouldnt break but to be honest I was glad the disc gave way before my leg. I had the board in storage since & only just got around to emailing the warranty support (3 year warranty included), anyway instant reply from them in Germany asking for my address & a new email first thing this morning saying 2 discs are on their way - 1 replacement and 1 spare.
Overall I cant complain, I've left a board in Slovakia and one in Spain so they dont cost me anything in travel either.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 579 ✭✭✭edmund_f

    take any photos?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,834 ✭✭✭air

Photos of what? The board itself or the broken disc or what? I didnt take any photos of the disc, but it just broke around the ring IIRC, it's in Slovakia & I'm not.
There are plenty of photos on the net of the boards themselves IIRC.
Overall I found the boards grand, they dont have any high tech core and are floppy enough but tbh for my level of snowboarding they're grand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 579 ✭✭✭edmund_f

yes, just curious to see how that would fail, similar experience myself, but the strap failed on my binding (Ride)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭Don1

Just my personal opinion but I would never recomend going down the budget route. Considering how much strain the board is under and what is required of it in terms of safety.
I'd go with second hand or an internet bargain tbh. If you are only going to try out boarding once and see what happens go rental, but if you are half serious or more, a good board is essential.

It's like trying to drive fast on cheap tyres. Sure they look the same and do the same, but they don't do as good a job and will let you down when you need them most!

My story: bought a second hand Wall 160 freeride with cheap Elfgen bindings for my first trip. Learned a fair bit and got on well enough on two subsequent trips (with replacement Flow bindings).
This year though for my first full season I upgraded to a Butron King 162 with Burton Custom Detox bindings and could not believe the feel, comfort and confidence it brought. Not that the Wall was bad, just this was exceptional!

To sum up, cheap as chips is not always good. Don't believe me you could try buy cheap tyres for your car and take on a wet muddy corner with just a tad too much speed and see how you fair out?? Didn't think so.........

I'd have to agree that a rental is the way to go for out the sport and I take your point about the ditchfinder (tyre) issues. However having said that, I'm sure they meet whatever safety standards are set or they wouldn't be allowed to be put on sale in Europe. Added to that, the guarantee period of 3 years is impressive and service was very good - I wasnt even asked for a receipt or date of purchase.

I've rented lots of good boards and have an older Burton in Spain and the Lidl yokes are definitely floppy. On the plus side they have good edges and held up fine to a few days of icy conditions that I put them through. On the runs I honestly couldnt say that I could notice any problems from the lack of stiffness. I've probably only got about 20 full days boarding under my belt though and I think I'd be typical of a lot of users from places like Ireland that cant board regularly. For what I'm able to do - small jumps, 180's and nice slalom runs down the slopes, it had met my needs fine.
Hopefully I'll get a lot more hard time on it this year and break it or something to give me an excuse to upgrade ;)

I think the board will hold you back in the long run tbh. Just my two cents.

Agree with Don1, but suppose each to their own - the only real problem i had with the lidl boards were the bindings, which one the ones i was unforunate to see would deflect which would mean your effort would be deflecting the binding rather than the board. for the average rider a board is a board - i think priority of equipment is boots then bindings and then board in that order.

should open this up to what crazy equipment have people been seen using on the slopes (worst i saw was jeans)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,834 ✭✭✭air

For sure it would hold me back in the long run, but tbh I dont see myself going very far as a boarder anyway. If I go somewhere for a week or 10 days a year, I'll spend 2-3 days getting back to square one and then a few days enjoying myself, doesnt leave much room for huge improvement. Overall for an occasional user like myself it suited fine.

I have to confess to having worn baggy jeans I'm afraid!
In my defence, I brought a friend with me to the Sierra Nevada resort in Spain and it was his first time so I knew he'd be spending a lot of time on his arse so I lent him my pants. It worked out perfectly tbh but it's an exceptional resort and can get very hot, you could nearly board in a pair of shorts some days when the sun's out!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭Don1

Clothes don't matter so much once you don't fall, and its warm. One of the girls I worked with in NZ was skiing in short (very short) shorts and a teeshirt. She made the mistake of not wearing gloves and cut the crap out of her hands. Oops.
Still think a better board means you get back to being good quicker and progress more in your few days a year Air. But you sound like your mind is made up so I'll leave you alone.

/me goes back to lusting after Burton boots which shall be added this year. (tossed my Salomon Maori after a full season's thrashing)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,834 ✭✭✭air

Ah yeah, I'm sure I'd be better off with a better board in the long run. I just wanted to report back that the boards are at least usable for someone beginning or looking for something cheap to lend to beginner friends or whatever. I'll update again if I progress any further with it. I splashed out on a decent set of Burton boots alright & bring those with me. Kept off my arse the day I wore the jeans alright and it was grand as you say. Wearing them in Canada at -20C however would not be so wise!

The clothes are generally okay for one offs and light usage, but tend not to last very long and in rare occasions can come apart in one big fall. That's the extreme though. Saw the catalogue today and that jacket with the ipod controls looks interesting, although I don't plan on changing my jacket for another few seasons. Cost too much! :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 579 ✭✭✭edmund_f

think the stuff in Tkmaxx would be better - saw an Orage jacket in there for the same sort of money

Good thinking batman. Forgot all about that. Although, ipod controls would be sweet.........

Not sure about the orange though, would be a bit loud for my liking.

My jacket is bright orange. :( (With a green/brown stripe that matches my green pants. White base on my board and white bindings.) I like loud!

    Haha, I read oraNge too!

@Gone Drinking, I got a jacket and trousers from Lidl last year, and found them excellent. My first time for a week of boarding, and they were just fine.
The trousers aren't extremely warm, you'll prob need to wear thermal bottoms. Also they have padding in the knees that's kind of cr@p tbh.

Other than that, they were quite comfortable and functional. I'm bringing them this year too, rather than spend money on buying brand gear.

Price last year was a bit lower though. I think I got both for about €80.....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭Don1

ooops. What a stupid brand name though. I'm sure it leads to all sorts of confusion!

Dunno.. Why buy Lidl snowboards.. don't trust to cheap things.
I bought my board thru useful framework at Snowboard Rush. Burton 2008 for just $130 with bindings. It's not always there for that price so I had to hunt it.
    Not spam! http://www.snowboardrush.com/Snowboards/Burton--Snowboard/

Well, I used the old Lidl board again back in early February for 4 days, got up to doing jumps about twice this height and the board survived. Some minor delamination in one corner alright from some suspect landings.

LOL, that ramp was constantly cut to sh1te so I was often all over the place going over the lip, hence the complete lack of styleee. You can just about see the lining coming out of the finger of my ****e Lidl gloves too, cheap gloves definitely not recommended, single use only those ones!

    What happened your Burton board?
