    Folks,

I'm looking for an engine hoist. I probably need a two tonne long reach one that I can fold up against the garage wall?

I can collect anywhere in the country.

I know its a bit of a long shot but I reckon the missus owes me an early Christmas present!!!:D

how much u figure on spending...ie do you want a new one or a nearly new one or an old well worn one....?

Also looking for one. I don't see a problem with buying one 2nd hand, particularly if it has been used occasionally by a car enthusiast, not regularly by a garage. It costs a lot to ship them from uk - nearly as much as the price of the engine crane.

Nothingn wrong with a well worn garage one either. Will normally be stronger than a DIY job, and to be fair, you won't be using it much anyway.

You could make one up if you are anyway half decent at welding. All you need is a one way ram and a a pump from an old tipper trailer or the likes.

Mine is almost new...want to make me an offer? I dont recall how much it cost but it was quite a lot....

I've been on the hunt for one for ages.
I have placed adverts in all the usual place's (including Adverts.ie) with no replies.

I did get an offer of a loan of one, but the guy was in Northern Ireland

What make is the one that you have corktina?

Of course I won't be using it much, but if its in the same condition as the trolley jacks at most garages, no thanks.
corktina - thats a bit vague. 150 euro is quite a lot, 300 euro is quite a lot, 450 euro is quite a lot.

I have one but I'm in Kerry.

Well, I'm in Kildare (2nd guy looking for one)

What price you looking for yours?

    Rob

Try the tool hire companies, obviously they can source these if they have them for rental. Might get one for you, or sell you an ex rental if they have surplus stock.

I've previously rented one from HSS in Dublin (Christchurch)

I wasn't offering to sell mine just possibly loan it - although I am a bit suspect about loaning anything to anyone I don't know (or even do know for that matter:) so I hadn't fully decided on that yet.

ive used mine once and them iot went out on loan for about 6 months...started getting a bit worried in the end as I was losing touch wioth the borrower..

I bought a new Draper one in Bradshaws in Newbridge a couple of years back- I've used it a lot more than I expected so its paid its way but I don't remember it being overly expensive (hence I can't remember the price...). It's a 2 tonne version that comes apart to take up not much room... Might be worth giving them a call for a price - it'll give you a good baseline for a secondhand if you decide to go that way.

    Thanks for the info.

It'snot easy to find one for sale. I've been around to most tool sellers in Dublin and there are none in stock and very expensive.( Draper, Sealy tools)
As for hiring one, I want to get the job done at my pace, not at the hire companies pace. HSS do a weekend rate, but if I run into problems ( which happens regularly on Land Rovers :D ) I'd like to be able to take my time.

As for loaning, I agree. You don't know me nor I you. But thanks for thinking about it. I recently posted the same request( looking for a hoist)on a Land rover board and a guy from the North of Ireland offered to loan me his, all i had to do was collect it. This guy does not know me from Adam, yet has still offered to loan me his hoist, class!

I will check out Bradshaws and see how much they want, As for Ebay, the cost of carraige kills the option of buying. It's a pity, as prices can be good.

    Thanks for all the replies,
    Rob

Call in and ask them for a discount - preferably early in the morning before it gets busy and they get hassled. No point in asking for it over the phone.

    Guys, Thanks for the posts.

I was away for the last couple of weeks and its great to see replies when you get back.

I'm looking to purchase one and keep it. I'd hate to borrow one as there is always the danger that you damage it, have to take the cost of replacing it, and still be left with no hoist. At least if its mine, I can only blame myself for any damage and probably repair it without needing to replace it.

Corktina, I reckon I need a 2 tonne long reach as I'm looking to take a 2.8l out of a '69 Merc 280se. Thanks for putting the offer out there though.

I'm going to give Bradshaws a shout too and see what happens.

    Thanks again lads.

I got mine (quite a while ago) at the tool shop on Capel Street downstairs - then passed it on via the boards...

Bought this on eBay.co.uk. New from a retailer, €230 inc VAT and Delivery.

2 tonne - same as a Sealey model.

    Image_001.jpg

Very pleased with it, pulled out a six cylinder Triumph engine and gearbox as one unit no problem.

If you want the name of the Seller, send me a PM and I'll send it on.
