Have a beautiful photo of my friend's wedding that I'd like to give them as a Christmas present. Ideally I'd like to have it printed onto canvas or similar. Any good offers around?

I've an order waiting to be delivered from these guys : http://www.updone.com/

Found them very reasonable. Upload your photo and get a quote before you commit to anything.

According to UPS tracking my order from last thursday arrived into Dublin today.

As they haven't arrived yet I can't give you any indication on quality.

I got the link from a thread on the photography forum - head over there for a more detailed discussion.

    Cheers,
    Sean

Jesus just looked at the pricing here. Very competitive. When you get the print can you let us know what the quality is like?

    Cheers

    Will do.

Ordered 2, one was 12"x10", the other was 10"x8.5".

Didn't get them gallery mounted - the total including postage can to around $21.

The Canvas works do them too - and if you're on pigsback you get 5points for every euro spent.

Thanks Viboy. What would be a good size to order? For a sitting room wall. What is gallery mounted?

Check http://www.aldiphotos.ie/ knowing Aldi I'd be surprised if they
not competitive on pricing. Might be worth checking the Photography
section here on Boards to see if anyone has used.

Quick question to those of you who have used updone.com, which version
did you order? Assembled, partly-assembled or rolled?

Just a quick q, for the people that uploaded their prints..what sort of resolution do they need for it to be successful on a large-ish canvas print..ie A4 and larger?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 425 ✭✭loup

Just found it on the FAQ of the site..sorry! I'll post it here in case anyone else needs it

How high is the resolution of image file good enough?
It is relative, depending on how large the canvas print to be and the effects you want to achieve on the canvas. Normally, to print a small photo or image, the dpi (dots per inch) of the image file should be more than 100. For a large format, the dpi should be at least 50. For examples, to print a 12" x 12" photo, the photo should have a resolution of at least 1,200 x 1,200 pixels. The 20" x 20" canvas print needs 1,500 x 1,500 pixels. The 40" x 40" needs 2,000 x 2,000 pixels. Sometimes, relatively low resolution can achieve a certain art work effect. Low resolution is not always undesirable. Anyway, We suggest you upload the image file with the highest resolution. You don't need worry about the file size, since our system accepts one up to 105 MBytes.

What resolution setup do you use to print my images?
We use 1,200 dpi (dots per inch) setup to print your images.

is there much to assembling the frame once it arrives from upDone?

I'd normally by the canvas bars and do this myself.

I assume you get the 4 canvas stretcher bars and the rolled canvas via post.

You'll need to assemble the frame using the wedges provided, a mallet would be useful for this part. It's very straightforward though.

Once the frame is assembled you put the canvas print side down and place the frame on top of it. Make sure the frame is centred and there is equally lengths of canvas on opposing sides.

Wrap the canvas around the top side and put the first staple top centre. Now use a canvas pliers to stretch the canvas tight bottom centre and put the next staple here (should be directly opposite the first).

Rotate 90 degrees and repeat the last step.

Rotate again and repeat the steps moving along the top and sides of the bar.

When you get to the corners fold the canvas in neatly and put a few staples in each corner to secure the canvas in place.

So it's a lot easier to just get them to send it done up?! I'd be afraid that you'd end up rippling the canvas or stapling it in the wrong place!

Just to add another possibility to the list. I used Funkdonline a couple of times last year and found them both reasonable and good for service. Based in Cork and I was able to collect the prints. a 24" x 24" was costing €60 if memory serves. Came mounted but not framed.

Received them yesterday morning - very happy with the quality, although very little to compare them against.

I got 2 prints done, one quite bright and the other a sunset scene. Both turned out fantastic.

Ordered on a Thursday and they arrived on Tuesday morning.

Overall, very happy with the service.

You didn't get them gallery mounted - does this mean they are just rolled canvas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 151 ✭✭viboy

Exactly - rolled canvas in a cardboard cylinder tube.

The prints were meant for framing, my next order will be a larger canvas and will get that gallery mounted.

Ok thanks!! Sounds like a great idea - will be trying it out for sure :D

is gallery mounted the proper timber and stapling onto it and presume this would push up the carriage. Would the revenue like to get their mits on this?

Yup i can vouch for Photobox.ie aswell great quality very fast!
Didnt get a canvas but got some phots enlarged for like €8 incl shipping having been quoted €50 by a local company + vat!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,858 ✭✭✭CuppaCocoa

Ordered two. Total came to €60. UPS arrived with them while I was at work today but left their card. I owe €25 which I presume is tax. I had requested the value to be $45 on the customs form so I don't know what happened. Not much of a bargain after all when you factor this in

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,471 ✭✭✭majiktripp

Order one at a time so theres two seperate deliveries as this will avoid going over the price where vat becomes applicable, there under no obligation to mark the value down because you ask them too. I asked a HK Camera dealer to mark down the value on a lens from $400 to $150 where I still got charged €50 by customs so you win some, you lose some.

Sorry to hear that you've got stung on the duty. Suggest you check if its correct - it sounds somewhat excessive tbh. I mean €25 = 42% of your €60. I got stung for duty on something completely different at about 20% all in just today and yeah it kinda kicks you in the butt when it happens.
Not much of a bargain after all when you factor this in

Not quite following you here (bear with me) - if you spent €60 say roughly $85/$90 for two prints = $40 approx for a single one. At that reckoning and a guess as per the updone price list, you probably got a print size of 20x20 or 18x24. Locally I checked today in Harvey Normans and A3 size (11.7×16.5) was €50 (btw the samples looked nice) Beyond A3, prices rose rapidly but i don't recall the specifics. Recently a post revealed Reads (Nassau St) Reads, offered 16X12 canvas prints @ €55 each.

My basic point in this detail is that even if you've been badly stung on duty/import fees you've paid €85 in total. Locally you would have paid €100 in Harvey Normans (Blanch) for smaller canvas prints (not sure but quite a deal more for prints of the size i'm guessing you got), or €110 in Reads (Nassau St) for canvas prints again approx A3 size and what i'm guessing is considerably less than what you actually got from updone????

I hope my line of logic above is correct - sorry if i am completely off the wall in understanding the plight you posted.

My purpose in posting this detail (and assuming that i'm at least some way accurate in my guesses above) is hopefully to demonstrate that maybe you're still onto something of a bargain given the size of what you probably have ordered (maybe received at this stage) when you look at what it may have cost you locally.

    Best wishes.

<<<Puts neck on block passing axe to lilybarlean :D >>>

EDIT: Sorry - my Harvey Norman prices were a bit too low. I happened to be back in there today - the A3 canvas print mounted is €69.99 so i guess that to get two photos (harvey norman style) would have actually cost €140 and i think you probably got out at €85 all in with the import duty etc paid. Perhaps still a bargain. (Other options were A2 canvas print @ €99.99 and A1 canvas print €129.99). Cheers.

Well they came today and I'm delighted with them. The wedding one is stunning (if I do say so myself!). Well worth the €25 customs charge! :D
