Two subject moderatorship

"Mathematics may be studied as a single honor course (TR031), or, alternatively, may be combined with one other subject from an arts or social science discipline within the two-subject moderatorship (TSM) programme. TSM is a joint honors programme. Both subjects are usually studied for three years and one subject only is studied in the fourth and final year. An honors degree is awarded in both subjects.

Single honor and TSM students follow the same mathematics courses. However, while TSM students cover all the principal areas, the workload is less intense than that of the single honor programme."

Let's say I wanted to do a TSM in french and maths. Then I say, what the hell, let's go get a masters. So let's say I wanna master in maths or w/e, I can do that right? And let's say I say feck being educated, I wanna educate, and I did the hdip or w/e, could I teach both french and maths to HL leaving cert?

And let's say I do french for 3 years and maths for my fourth, what's my level of french like about now?

Yes, you get an entire Honours Degree, as you would if you did it as a single honour.

Presumably you'd avail of the Erasmus programme and go to France for the year, thus being very profficient if not completely fluent.

good questions, sorry i cant answer them but i'm gonna throw in another one for my own interest, - if you get 2 degrees, in theory (at least) would it be possible to get 2 first class honours, if so then its a 3 year bachelor degree for one course? Is that correct?

Doubtful you can do a Math masters. In TSM (with the exception of Math/economics) you do the first year of the full maths degree over two years and then in your 3rd year you take a few courses from the 2nd year of the full maths degree. Though if you decided you really liked maths after the first 2 years you can pretty easily move into 2nd year of the full maths degree. Though you'll have lost a year and need to pay fees.

    Most likely.

You can't specialise in Maths via TSM. You can do a joint honours with economics and possibly Philosophy. Otherwise you have to major in the other subject. As for level of French couldn't tell you. Pretty good ? :-)

It is possible, as long as you satisfly the entry requirements for the Master's programme.

Yes, I think so. You can find the appropriate information in this Word document.

You wouldn't be able to do maths in fourth year, it'd have to be French. It'd be sufficient for teaching purposes but if you're seriously considering postgrad study in maths at this point I'd really recommend either doing single-honors maths or else picking a related subject to study with it within TSM.

Level of French - high enough - the department is not known to be particularly spectacular but occasionally one does come across someone pleased with it. :) Worth remembering that you're studying both language and literature... the literature side of things does seem to turn some people off in language courses. And also that conversational French and written French are quite different in terms of formality and suchlike. But if you like it and are willing to put in a bit of effort in first year (apparently it's quite a jump from Leaving Cert), like anything else, you'll be grand.

The French department is a bit of a mess alright, but if your French is decent enough (B in the LC) and you apply yourself you'll be fine. That said, my course doesn't involve the lit aspect...

What's the deal with points and TSM, how do you work out how many points you would need?

There are points requirements for each course in TSM, and whichever of the two is higher is the number of points you need.
