Mysterious Fingerprints

A clear set of fingerprints have appeared on an exposed beam in my house. It's a dark set of prints, of a left hand. They look as if the person who left them had touched something dusty beforehand. I never noticed them before, and to my knowledge, I nor anyone else in the house has touched this beam before (these are 9' ceilings!) I suppose there could be innocent explanations, like it's the print of the builder who installed the beam when the house was built, etc... even still it's a little spooky!

somtimes when you have wood ,if you hands are anyway dirty you leave a print, but over time dust tends to stick to it causing the print to go darker so i woudnt say spooky just yet, probly left from the builder or were you or any of the house hold up in the attic you may have put your hand on it not knowingly,,,,,,,,,

does sound too strange to me, unless you really can say for sure that they were not there before ?

Hi all thanks for the comments. Sorry I wasn't back sooner with this, I was busy then, with Christmas I couldn't get hold of the camera. OK, here's the photo:

    hi Oracle,

yes it certainly looks like finger prints alright, is seems to be on the wal too, could you rub the substance on the wall, was it deep in the wall, or did it just rub off like a fine dust?

Obviously it is very difficult to make any conclusions based on this one picture, thanks for posting it.

I think a greasy or sweaty print could have been left there ages ago, but been invisible at first. Over time dust and maybe soot could have collected on the print, and allowed it to show up as it has.

Well its definately the prints of a left hand alright, looks like it might have been someone steadying themselves maybe while painting, hammering etc?
