Just wondering does anybody know what the flashlight looking "thing" is on the bottom rail of the m4(?) on the cover shot of novembers Airsoft International?

It looks like a flashlight full of string......(lay off the drugs, arcto)

there designed for cave and underground work rather than a narrow beam it floods an area with light, as for the pic me thinks its the glass in the lamp ,rather than a camera effect

It's not an affect, it's very simply just been coloured in with a marker. Scribble along some glass/perspex with a black marker and you'll get that same lined effect. It's to stop glare and over exposure when taking the picture I'd presume as it serves no practical use besides dulling the light output

I havent seen this pic but i would doubt it would have anything to do with taking the photograph, the photogragher has full control of stuff like shutter speed/aperture/white balance/ISO etc and would adjust the camera to suit the conditions, there many ways around it, like taking a few shots with some underexposed/right exposure/and over exposed and then merge the pics.,:)

I know but the shot is facing straight on into the torch lens, and the torch is turned on. There isn't a huge amount you can do when shooting at a light other than darken it or block it out. I'll see if I can dig out the picture

Edit: Found it after 10 second search.

So who blured it out then? The player or the camera dude using a computer programe? And why didnt they just turn it off?

Looking close at the paper mag cover it looks like a thin tip marker job rather than a PS brush. It's too even around the edges to be anything computer generated. Unless the guy was seriously seriously tricky with a drawing tablet

hmm, cant say ive seen anything like that before, and especially as a photography solution., it almost looks like tin foil pushed into the torch lens.,

The scan doesn't do it justice. I've seen it done once on a torch that was too strong a beam for use at night without compromise on other issues. It wasn't for photographic reasons though.

My money was on the star battery light thing http://www.starairsoft.com/product_detail.php?productid=67# they do, as the flip cover you can get from surefire for the lights only come in colored (e.g red blue) filter or a plain black cover never seen a clear front lens on one of them, but no idea.

but the idea is based on a torch being used in iraq and afghanistan

It most likely is that unit, I'm just saying that it looks as though they scribbled on one of the clear filters with a black marker to dim/dull it when turned on for whatever reason.

That would look better then a PEQ box on a HK416 IMHO

Good point but considering mosty airsoft is played in conditions where a torch is useless or would more likely to give your position away i don;t see it as to much of a problems.

Well my money would be on the star battery as you can not see a peq or crane stock (another copy of AI had almost the same picture i think it was the 'so you want to be a seal' edition and you can clearly see the crane stock this one is even more square on to the camera, he could always be useing a li-op in the stock tube or just simple have removed the battery for the photo) from the picture on the star site it has a very reflective front for some reason maybe that made a reflection on the day or was dulled down by the person to stop it reflecting when playing.

It is strange, that area it has no depth at all if they edited in the light room then its very sloppy.

Edit: looking at it more im convinced that it has been coloured in with marker on the unit itself, if you look at the pic in the bottem south east of the lamp head you see the edge is the same kind of patten you would expect to see when you where a kid and you used a stencel or somthing and filled in the space with pen fast you get a very hard edge when the pen comes in contact with the edge of the frame (sorry very bored at work :P )
