They put up with it because it is everybody else's fault. It is all those other people in the cars that are getting in your way right?

The fact is that most of these shopping park developments are disgustingly badly designed, located and planned. They stick 1000s of car parking spaces in the middle of one of the most congested parts of one of the most congested cities in Europe and guess what happens?

No money, thought or resorces are put into provisions for public transport for the centres or the areas they are in so everyone has to drive to them and around christmas time everyone has to go amd visit every single stinking chain-shop every single day.

Ireland got rich and we had the choice, we could have taken the opportunity to look at how other developed countries dealt with the problems associated with rapid growth. We could have carefully planned how we would use our land and controlled development so that people would have had to use cars as little as possible.

Instead we went for the quick buck. Greed is good and the houses we live in, industrial parks we work in and shopping centres we flock to for the 6 months around the birthday of christ were all built with the single concern of making the developers (and Liam Lawlor) as much money as possible. And best of all we (well I didn't but you probably did) cheered and clapped and voted these greedy scumbags back into high office again and again.

We are the architects of the pig sty we live in so now we can sink into the shít of our own making.

    yes, thats pretty much it

spot on really, but the sad thing is this traffic situation is going to get a whole lot worse before it gets better (if at all). its a dead end as far as i can see, unless they create a magical big dig project.

pathetic forward planning tbh, just like the (ahem) M50.

everyone needs shopping and stuff, but putting up with traffic like what i saw today is just a farce and i would rather stay at home, i can only imagine the traffic accidents between now and jan in Dublin.

There was a serious traffic accident in Blanchardstown today, I'm sure that had an impact on traffic. There is also a reduced bus service out there this week.

Speaking of which, has the relocated bus stops at the centre improved things much there? Thankfully I haven't been out that way in quite a while.

The centre at the weekends will be crazy from now to christmas, the fact that today was so awful weatherwise is a factor as well.

One of the best things about Tokyo is that the big railway companies own all of the shopping centres.

So guess how many parking spaces are built into the main dept. stores/shopping centres?

I got the 39 into town on Friday evening for the first time in ages and hadn't realised they moved thingsaround. It made a huge difference. I was once on a bus that took 25 minutes to get in and out of the centre, all to service a single bus stop. That's ludicrous.

    long flight,

nah. just 12 hours ish. or nearly half the time i was stuck in traffic today, and i dont see why rain is a problem, cars got wipers and air con nowadays, doesnt mean things are put to a stand still. just bad drivers.

Exactly. I don't go anywhere near it if I can help it around this time of year unless it's first thing in the morning.

It won't improve till after the January sales, and when Freeflow starts it'll get worse as - if the last few years are anything to go by - they'll put the Garda right outside the station at a signaled junction that works just fine as it is, rather than even 300m up the road at the roundabout beside the Quinn Direct building where she might do some good.

Whilst I agree with a lot of what you're saying, I think you need to get off your high horse there too.

The facts are that politics in this country are dominated by the "big two" so regardless of who you vote for, you're going to end up with one of them (the alternative would be a coalition with so many members and agendas that nothing would get done). Please don't try to convince me by the way, that FG would be any different in power.

The reason FF won the last election wasn't because they are the best party, but because the opposition couldn't even manage to run a convincing campaign or present themselves as a realistic alternative to the sitting government.

Given this, and with economic slowdown on the horizon, I'd wager those that voted FF did so on a "better the devil you know" basis rather than chance Enda Kenny and his coalition partners.

And what about those that DID vbote for the alternatives (Greens) only to have them get into bed with FF anyway? Don't tell me that was the public's doing. Politics is this country is all about getting in and staying in so as to feather your own nest and that of your friends and family. The general public has very little to do with it.

OT I know, but comments like "you made your bed now lie in it" really annoy me and show a lack of understanding of the backroom dealings that are part and parcel of almost everything in this country.

What SHOULD have happened is an independent Transit Authority was established with statutory powers to enforce the changes needed to make public transport work in this city/country.

I heard it was taking 2 hours and 10 minutes to get onto the M50 from blanch this morning. Can you imagine how bad it will get when they start upgrading that junction.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43,045 ✭✭✭✭Nevyn

I've been on a bus that was gotten after the shopping centre and took over an hour to get to to the blanch village round about.

Most of the year, Blanchardstown shopping centre is fine for getting in and out of I think. Much better than Dundrum shopping centre. It helps if you're willing to park your car in one of the car parks round the edge and walk an extra 2 mins as well. I see people put themselves through all sorts of misery for a spot in the red or green car parks, when there are millions of spaces available elsewhere that are easy to get in and out of.

It'll be hell between now and January.

Anytime I go to Blanch at the weekend we usually go early (before 10 on Sat or 12 on Sun) and get a spot right outside the Dunnes entrance. Its worth getting up early to avoid the hassle later on.

The best bit is when leaving an hour or two later, loads of people drive into that car park looking for a space beside the door (of whch there aren't any) and when they see you going to your car stop nearby waiting for you to go. I usually make them wait a little longer! They spend longer waiting for a spot than it would take to walk to/from a car park further away.
