can I record programmes I'm not watching with sky plus box & no subscription?

I'm going to sign up for a sky plus box with the intention of cancelling my subscription at the end of the 12 months, keeping the equipment and getting as much of my tv viewing as free as possible. I want to be able to set the timer to record programmes I'm not watching (why I'm going for sky plus rather than a digibox) and watch a different channel than the one being recorded so my question is this - will this be possible with a sky plus box once my subscription has ended? I have a dvd recorder which I currently use with my NTL subscription (due to be cancelled) and if not, is there another way I can do this without paying a subscription to a supplier?

It does not record at all without a Sub.
You need a non-Sky two tuner PVR,

Technomate, Humax, Reel-Multimedia, Dreambox make them. Often bigger disks than Sky+ and some have DVD writer built in.

Or two satellite cards on a PC (Linux, XP, Mediacentre) but high level of computer literacy needed.

Thanks watty - this whole area is a minefield if you're not technical. Am I correct in thinking that after my subscription to Sky lapses, i need the equipment you mention, a satellite dish, dvd recorder (anything else?) in order to get free satellite and be able to record something I'm not watching at the same time? I'm beginning to think I should cancel the sky subscription completely and start again. Any more advice would be great - thanks in advance

You can only watch content from subscription channels with a valid subscription. This includes all programming you have recorded onto the Sky+ box. Even after you end your subscription you cannot watch them unless you subscribe again.

Does this mean you can't record content to dvds from the sky plus box to view in another location? interesting..

The dish, box etc is yours. A non-Sky supplied system will work on the end of the coax cable for the free channels (see ICDG in my sig).

The Sky+ works just as a receiver (no record or playback) of free channels (BBC, ITV, Film4 etc) when you have no sub.

The Sky+ or SkyHD during sub will playback. But a VHS or DVD recorder won't record any channel marked as copy protected (usually all of SkyBox office at least).

When the Sky+ or SkyHD has no sub, what you can record is what you watch, if it is a free channel and only on external recorder in same fashion as a normal Sky Box or most FTA receivers.

If you downgrade subscription any programs already record on Sky+ or SkyHD, that are on channels not in your sub will not play at all, as if you had cancelled your sub completely.
