How do I stop drinking? The Sequel

A number of months ago I asked this question of my fellow Boards members and I thought it was about time I came back to acknowledge how helpful those responses I received have been. I can't say that I have a concise answer to the question but I have definitely turned a corner. It is no longer necessary for me to go for a drink every night or on any particular night. I'm as likely to sit in with a good book on a Monday or a Saturday night. Rather then let the beer rule my head, I now decide myself whether to go out for a drink or not. I can't put my finger on exactly what has changed but perhaps it's just me taking responsible for myself. I still have work to do but the Boards set me to thinking in a more determined fashion about the whole problem and for that I thank you all sincerely.

You say that you 'still have work to do'; have you considered Alcoholics Anonymous? A 12 Step Program could help you sort out whatever is still bothering you, as well as helping you stay on track.

    Hi Aard,
Yes I have considered AA but I'm back to enjoying a few drinks a few times a week now rather than previously when it was all getting out of control. The bit of work I have to do is to move away from the beer for a while or even for good. I'd like to have a go at life sans alcohol.

Yeah its difficult. I stopped drinking for 18 months before. Its hard to do in Ireland. I was 20 at the time so going out was hard but i needed to do it. And i did. I had great support from friends and family and that made a difference.

Glad to hear you have a better grip on it Hermy, both your body and mind will thank you. Do you have way more energy now? Is getting outta bed in the morning alot easier? I've cut down alot myself and the weekends seem to last so much longer too cause I'm not in a drunken haze for most of it, I actually do stuff...n things! Even little things like having my clothes all ready for work on a Sunday evening and being in bed by 11 feel really good. That might sound weird to some people but i'v e a feeling you'll understand what i mean.
Fair play to you, the best part is you did it all yourself.

    Hey Beetlebum,
Great to hear from you; delighted you're keeping well.:)
Can't say I've gotten to the "early to bed and early to rise" stage yet but like I say, I still have work to do.
