Time for a new browser?

I've been using Firefox for years but find it is sometimes an awful memory/CPU hog even with only one tab open. So I'm looking for an alternative. Safari is supposed to be fast and lightweight but I've used it a lot and find its usability/functionality to be awful. So I've been thinking about Opera. Is it any good? How is IE these days or should I not even consider it?

I don't need a lot of extensions/plugins etc by the way, just fast, efficient, reliable browsing.

I like the look of the new IE (although i still use Firefox, for the plugins and such..)

Apparently (i don't know personally) Opera is supposed to be quite a tidy little browser, I've heard from here that people have noticed it's not such a resource hog as firefox...

    I know i'm being a bit vague, sorry i can't help more...

I use the new IE as firefox has a huge memory leak and mozilla dont seem to be able to fix it. As long as you pair IE wuth a good AV + Firewall and spyware protection you will be fine.

There is also the apple browser ( safari ) too, but i didnt like it.

    Check out K-Meleon

I plan on using that when Firefox annoys me enough to ditch it.

    try www.maxthon.com

version 2.0 is good but i prefer the rendering of version 1.6

just read the instructions and learn how to use it properly, very productive browser, secure, memory efficient, small download

Any updates OP. I have just downloaded OPERA as I' sick of Firefox swamping my CPU. I haven't installed it yet. Was just wondering if you had a chance to try some of those mentioned above?

From the Firefox 3 beta 1 release notes:
    • Memory usage: Over 300 individual memory leaks have been plugged, and a new XPCOM cycle collector completely eliminates many more. Developers are continuing to work on optimizing memory use (by releasing cached objects more quickly) and reducing fragmentation.

Those encountering memory issues in Firefox may want to give this beta a try - the developers are looking for feedback on this and a number of other features/changes

Myabe not what the OP had in mind but sometimes on my PC I use the Flock browser Link. Admittedly I d/l it originally just to have a look but it's quite good. It's one of those "Web 2.0" browsers with a social web theme to it (easy to upload pix, share links, etc). It looks fairly IEish in styling aswell.
