    Hey,

So found out last week that myself and the family are going to Paris for 4 nights for our first family holiday in 12 or so years.

I posted here before about purshasing a DSLR camera, so anyways, last night i decided now was as good a time as any to get the camera. So I went onto pixmania and ordered the D40x with 18-55mm Lense and 4gb Memory card...

Can't wait for the stuff to arrive so I can start playing around with it.

So, I ask you, has anybody got any advise for me to try and get a few good shots with the new camera on the holiday?

    All advise welcome....:D

First off, get a bag to carry the camera and bits and bobs in ;)

First of all enjoy your hols.

anyway Paris is full of opportunities with a camera. You could have a go at the Eiffel Tower in dusk or night lights. You will obviously need a tripod for that.

You could go to the Centre Pompidou to capture some stuff on colours and angles etc.

Anyway, seriously you could take great shots anywhere in Paris, the Metro, Montmarte etc...it's a beautiful city with rather pretty ladies in plentiful supply :D

I was in Paris a couple of years ago and found the windy the side streets provided the best photo ops. Much better early when it's not crowded or you'll find annoying bonesacks getting in your shot.

All my shots of the big tourist attractions seemed to have my missis in them!

As an aside, the shots I get when I go looking for them are generally not as pleasurable to me than the ones that just happen when I'm travelling to get there, just rambling around etc. Don't overlook such chances, I'm sure Paris will be full of these spur-of-the-moment opportunities

One word of advice speaking as a family member who takes photos on trips - do not spend too much time behind the lens... it's a holiday! Enjoy that with your family. :)

When I go and photograph events, landscapes etc. I often find myself so drawn into the photography that I don't get time to enjoy the show. And since your family is going along with you you're going to have to consider whether they'll be satisfied with you stopping every so often to take another (hopefully) beautiful shot. Photography is often very suited for going by yourself...

    So:
    1. Enjoy the trip - don't mind about the photography.
    2. Memory snaps are probably more important than "creative" shots.
    3. If you have the time though - Paris is a beautiful city with great photo ops - post them up when you come back. :)

On the technical side of things - you may want to get a circular polariser for the lens so really bring out that Parisian sky. If you're not familiar with SLR/dSLR operation you should probably practise and play with the settings before leaving (make sure you don't miss that once in a lifetime shot!)

Area around or on top of
    Arc de Triomphe
    Tour Eiffel/Eiffel Tower
    Sacre Couer
    Montmartre

Around the bridges, Notre Dame, Ile Saint Louis etc

Check out FNAC or Darty for electronic goods and memory cards at fairly good prices as well

    But mostly enjoy yourself...
