how to visit a Marae in New Zealand?

    heading to NZ for the holidays and would love to visit a marae (maori meeting house etc)but how do I organize it?
    we are going to be around Northland area.:confused:
    anyone any experience in this?

    Its not that easy , if you want to go to a tourist trap version like in Rotarua , no probs , its all very touristy and tacky though.

    To go to a proper marae you need to be invited in by a Maroi.
    I was lucky enough to be asked into one in Greytown and it was great crack, very friendly people , if you do get asked in remember to leave the camera outside or better still don't take it with you that day.

    If you vistit Rotarua (about 2.5hrs south of Auckland) go to Te Puia. They have the "traditional" tourist version there. Nice spot to visit in the summer.

    lived in NZ before and i do not want to go to Rotorua with a dozen snap-happy yanks with cameras out the wazoo!!!
    So i have to be invited,ok where do I go to do that?
    I heard that there are nice marae in Northland and we will be there for a couple of days(Pahia,Russell etc)
