 Norton is the worst virus ya could ever put on a pc. The longer its on, the more it slows your pc down. Avast or Avg free are many times better than it. Don't ever pay for antivirus software as there are better free alternatives.

If you really do insist on paying for one use Nod32 or Kapersky.

Does the same job and does it better in the sense that when it runs its scan it doesnt cripple the PC.

Ive been using it on 2 home pcs now for 2 years , not one problem , brilliant.
    Cannot fault it.

Avast all the way, free subscription for home users and its less muck and junk than Norton. Avast or AVG is your best options, I doubt Norton was the reason your machine stayed virus free in the first place, your probably just a cautious user!

I used to have Norton for like 2 years or something, it worked brilliantly but it was soooo slow, was killing the PC... Decided to uninstall it & got avast! instead...

Avast! does the same work as Norton (seems to update virus definitions a lot more though..) and it's free and it does not rape your computer...

    Avast! ftw!!!

    Yep get rid of mcaffee.

just in regard to this. is it recommended to completely remove all mcafee related features or just the antivirus? i.e i want to put avg on my new laptop and previously i just removed the antivirus but the mcafee control centre was still running, i left it as it seemed to cover some other stuff, what is the most advisable?

Paying for Antivirus protection on a normal computer in this day and age??? Never heard of it!!

Seriously OP, AVG or Avast are exactly what you are looking for.

Get rid of it all. You can get free anti-virus, free spyware remover and free firewall that are better than mc affee.

Easy to install,Very easy to use, doesent even show itself at boot up it just sits in the system tray,Smal updates so you dont have to wait an hour on a dial-up connection, and the option for low priority when scanning.

    AVG 9/10
    avast [havent tryd it yet]
    MacFee 1/10

    Hi,
I've been using Norton Internet security for years and never had a problem. Comes with firewall, anti phishing, anti spam as well as anti virus.

I'd really recommend it, Doesn't slow down either my pc or laptop. Just bought N.I.S. 2007 3 user license on Ebay for €15 including postage and packaging from USA. Yes €20....$14.?? Have used the same seller for 2 years now. It's practically free.

I am using the Personal version of McAfee and the Small Business Version and have no complaints about either. Of the commercial ones, over the years I have found both McAfee and Kaspersky have consistently done what they are supposed to do, as did Norton once upon a time. Although I will admit both can be heavy on resources.

More often than not people run into trouble when they come on the Web to ask questions because that usually suggests they haven't been using anything at all.
Of the free ones , I find the AVG pretty good, having little experience of Avast.

I do think it's a bit disingenuous of people so say dump this one or that one. For me Norton is the only package I am very wary of, as I have found it to cause more problems than it cures.

As long as people are learning from what they read here and putting on appropriate protection then that's enough in my book.

Stay away from Norton or McAfee. Norton is fine for Corporate use but terrible when it comes to Home use as it does not pick up many if any Trojans... I have seen many times PC's that have Norton installed but out of date. When I remove Norton and install AVG it picks up and removes numerous Dialers/Trojans and even virus's that should have been picked up by Norton.

I have never used Avast so I can't comment, but for me AVG is by far the best Free Anti-Virus out there at the mo'.

AVG also have a free Anti-Spyware tool as well ;)
