I was looking to get a few PS2 games for the PS3. Was thinking of Dragon Quest 8 etc. Any opinions?

Also, what is the extent of PS1 backwards compatability?

Dragon Quest 8 is great, as is Rogue Galaxy, FFXII, Okami and ICO.

God of War 1 and 2, Shadow of the colossus.

Thanks, I actually think every single one of these would be right up my alley!! There isn't any games I really want on the PS3 at the moment (not that I can already get on the 360). Uncharted looks good though.

On a slightly different note, what's the best plac to pick up a HDMI cable. They have them for pretty cheap on eBay but not sure of the quality.

Will defo try SHadow of Colossus as well.

Dragon Quest VIII is a brilliant game, well worth getting. I'd skip FFXII it bored me to tears and wasn't a real FF game anyway. FFX is a much much better game but you probably played it already (and if you haven't you really should). If you have an american PS3 I'd pick up Odin Sphere, wonderful mix of RPG and side scrolling beat'em up and the most beautiful game on any system. God Hand is worth a look, cheap, tacky but a brilliant if rock hard game that will have you crying with laughter.

    The PS1 compatibility is excellent,

Same as it was on PS2 essentially.

Like 99% of games work flawlessly

From reading your various posts Retro I know well that you don't like FF XII:D I haven't actually played FFX so I might give that a whirl instead. As XII is only £9.99 on play I might still pick it up anyway.

I'm laughing my @ss off here. It's true what they say, just took the PS3 out of the box and it's covered in dust:)

Well I'd go for FFX over it any day. It's arguably the best in the series, has a wondeful battle system and storyline. I think if you just want one RPG go for Dragon Quest VIII. You're a big fan of Skies of Arcadia and Dragon Quest VIII is very much in the same vein.

Sold:) Just to be clear I haven't played any PS2 games (as hard as that may be for people to believe). I had a PS1 and then a DC. Once the DC died (although seeing as games are still being released.........) I went for the XBox and Gamecube as they seemed to have the edge technically. Looking forward to discovering some old gems and if Final Fantasy X and Dragon Quest 8 are as good as you say I'm in for a treat.

Damn, seems like Rogue Galaxy isn't PS3 compatible:(

Hmm.. seemed to work on my american PS3, was an american Rogue Galaxy as well and by worked I mean I played the first 15 minutes of the game to test the disc was alright.

Not a big loss, Dragon Quest VIII is by the same people and is the better game.

I just got 60GB PS3 and I'm holding onto my fav PS2 games.
I'm keeping ICO, SOTC, Beyond Good & Evil, God of War, FFXII, Dark Cloud II, MGS3 and GT4.

Rogue Galaxy works perfectly with FW 2.00.

Yep, I've only played Rogue Galaxy on my PS3.

Nice one, I'll add that to my order list. Have ordered FFX and DQVIII from play.com already. Reckon all these RPGs could keep me going for a while (not to mention I'm not halfway through Eternal Sonata).

Am thinking of picking up Shadow of the Colossus to play on the PS3. What are people's opinion of the game? as I always see people singing it praises. What sort of a game is it exactly...anything like Zelda for the N64/GC/Wii as I love the zelda games.

Since the ps3 has been released i thought there would be a huge amount of used ps2 games in shops like game and gamestop but when i had a look a few weeks ago there were not that many at all.I'm still on the lookout for wipeout fusion
