    Hey,

I'm looking for any recommendations on buying a good learner saxophone. I posted before about this, but was looking for info on which brand to go for. I'm now wondering if anyone has any advice on the best place to actually buy the instrument, whether it be online or in a shop (in Dublin area).

    Okay, cheers!:)

I don't know anything about Sax or brass, but in general there are two ways of thinking.

    1. that it's more important that you play the instrument before you buy it, so you should only buy locally
    2. that the difference in cost:quality from buying over the internet is drastic enough that you can get something so significantly better for the same money that trying it out first is irrelevent

I would definitely be inclined to say that, if you're starting and have no definite preferences with regards to the instrument yet, a cursory play before purchase is not going to reveal anything. You could still dislike it later anyway, or, as likely, you may find your future preferences are dictated by your first instrument. Preference is very much a personal and often arbitrary thing. Anyway, long story short... I think option 2 is more applicable.

With that in mind, look on http://www.thomann.de and then see if you can get feedback on some of their entry level instruments. You will pay a lot more for a lot less in Dublin.

I'm looking for a student level sax aswell and I'm pretty much set on a 500 series Jupiter. Went in to Paul Ryan's there the other day (4 Eustace Street in Temple Bar). Go in and have a chat with him and he'll surely sort you out. The mans a clarinet builder and he knows his stuff. Probably the best you can go for for brass/woodwinds as far as I know.

    Hey cheers for that,

do you mind me asking how much you were quoted for the Jupiter 500. The one or two sites that I've found on the net are coming out at roughly 320 stg.

He's selling for about e800... 1 year warranty, and it's handy, so it's fine.

    Thanks for that Kawaii,

I notice the website quotes 599Euro for the Jupiter 500.

Do you mind me asking if you got something extra with it for 800Euro.

    Cheers.

oh I was talking about a sax in the 500 series... http://www.paulryanmusic.com/instruments-details.html?instrument=45 website has it around e799 but when I went in he said it was around 850. It comes with a case and a few things. Think it specifies on the page I linked to...

It might not nessecarily be the best deal going but it's convenient for me so I'm happy enough with that.
