Should I call in sick?

I need your advice, citizens of AH! I'm wondering if I should call in sick to my crappy part time job this evening. I'm working 4-10.

    Why I should go:
    I need the money

Why I should call in sick:
I am sick (tonsillitis, ear infection, cold)
    I genuinely feel pretty crappy
It's a food shop and it'd be kind of unhygienic to be working
I've a presentation to do tomorrow that I could really use today to work on.

I know that I could work through being sick, but I don't really want to.

If you're genuinely sick then call in sick.

exactly -- if you're not well (especially if you're working with food) then don't go. Best that you take one evening off and get better. Than work through and feel worse & end up having to take longer off.

    Feel better soon :)

Call in sick - there is a bit of a bug that is going around...And if you feel slightly unwell anyway, then you are better off. Work on the presentation and go back to work feeling better.

Only thing is, you shouldn't do it too often or they wil either cop it or get tired of hearing it and demand doctor's certs and things like that...If you leave the job you will need a reference or it might be handy to step back into the job some Summer if you are between jobs...

The fact that you've posted the question up here would lead Pighead to conclude that you are in fact NOT SICK. If you were sick you would have called in already without hesitation. You have started imagining symptons at this stage. You're mind is trying to fool you're body that you are sick.

People have been doing this since the beginning of time. If you were to see a doctor right now he would say "Faith in my professional opinion you are NOT SICK. However if you suck my todger, I will consider giving you a sick note"

It really is up to you Faith but if you want Pigheads advice, GO TO WORK.

Yeah, Faith, sure you're sick. You just want to stay at home and watch Sylar-centric episodes of Heroes over and over again. But that's ok - I'm planning to pull a sickie myself Friday and spend the day appreciating the Claire-centric ones.

I called in sick a while ago. My manager was not happy with me! Ah well.

Boss: Sure, take the next week off. Hey, while you're at it, take the rest of your life off. I'm hiring a Polish replacement.*

I agree with Tazz. If you're sick, don't work with food. The boss can shag off.

I think that time management is really something you should be examining as opposed to making up excuses for your procrastination over your college work.

Maybe if you didn't post on internet forums you might be able to free up enough time to do both your college stuff and make it to your part time job.

    Just some thoughts for you.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,231 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

Don't go. College work is more important. When you've passed all of your exams, you can pull up outside the shop in your chauffeur-driven limo, then tell your old boss to shove his baps up his deli!

You're not considering knockon effects: if shes sick and spreads it via food then other people get sick, they dont go to work and then the economy loses hundreds of man-hours!!!

Not to mention the potential for the sickness to become a deadly virus that targets people with special abilities... oh ho.

It's simple. You are sick, you could make other people sick, that's not fair. Stay at home.

Plausible reasons for calling in sick

    1. if your nosy neighbour is outside
    2. if you have a fly on your car windscreen
    3. if cannot find clean jocks
    4. if you fall over when putting on your trousers
    5. if you cannot find your other shoe

    and of course

    6. if you are really sick

i once drove 35km (half way to work) one day, was feeling so bloody tired and miserable due to lack of sleep (bloody internet).Got to a traffic light which turned red just as i was 20 feet away. Really pee'd me off so i turned around and went home. Told the boss one of the kids put diesel in my car instead of petrol. he swallowed it!!!!!

    had the best sleep ever

I'm very happy indeed and no, I'm not faith's boss....

Her thread seemed to be focusing on the wrong areas - instead of seeking validation for pulling a sickie because she's that needy it might be a better idea to examine the issues that have led her to this decision in the first place. i.e. Can't be arsed going to work

If you can't be arsed going to work and you have a reasonable attendance record pull a sickie FFS! It's not like she's a linchpin in a major investment bank or anything

But mr Bryce it might take people 30 seconds longer to get their food what if these people are police or doctors and their 30 seconds that was wasted by the op not being in work could have been used to saves lives or stop crimes.

    What about that?

I called in sick a while ago. My manager was not happy with me! Ah well.

feck him . there is a weird bug doing the rounds and half the people i know are down with it. not quite the flu but elements of it. if you work with food its a hygene issue to boot.

but even if its not, feck him again! we've got the lowest number of day's off in western europe. its your patriotic duty to bunk off at least 5 times a year to bring up the average :D

havent pulled a sickie myself in ages but then again im working now so you can guess how hard my job is ! best advise to bunking off is dont do it on a monday or a friday. they cop pretty quick your either going on or recovering from the beer (so being wednesday your boss, while pissed, probably belives your on the level). and put at least 2 months between bunks.

TBH it really comes down to what your working policy is. my place will allow 3 days off before demanding a doctor cert and pay for the time off. in contrast my brother gets feck all for the first 2 WEEKS but then gets 70% of his wages for up to 13 after that. more if he's got a doctors note.

best excuses is the scutters. no one wants to admit theyve got em and no boss wants to push the issue.

if your pissed off with your employer and just want out by being a bitch ya can claim "mental fatigue/exaustion" its so vague it can mean anyting from a mental breakdown to just not being arsed turning up. but the single best on is "nerves" . do the acting well and the doctors will give you certs for as long as you like and theres not an employer in the country that wants to look like its attacking the afflicted :D:D

Very good point indeed - but, I'd imagine, the company in question has some sort of procedure in place to put in cover for someone who's called in sick so I fail to see how that might have an effect on saving lives, stopping crimes etc.

Anyway - don't people in these types of professions take lunch during a designated break period anyway so an extra 30 seconds shouldn't really matter anyway.

Seriously, I'm actually rolling on the floor right now. Again, you just skipped the bit where I described that I'm actually sick, right? This is quite a monumental day for me because I've never called in sick before, to any job. Ever. In 6 years. The "issues" that have led me to this decision are:

    1. Infectious tonsillitis
    2. A bacterial ear infection
    3. An infectious cold.

Thanks for the replies everyone, most of them made me laugh and cheered me up!

Good to hear I have you laughing - so answer me this then: If you're actually as sick as you say you are why are you bothering to put it to a public vote as to whether or not you should call in sick?

Surely if one is genuinely sick its a no brainer and doesn't require the input of forumisers.

I've never called in sick before and I'm not really aware of what criteria one applies to it. I can get out of bed and keep food down, does that mean I'm well enough to go to work? Are you only supposed to call in sick when you're on deaths door? By asking here, I got opinions from a broad range of people as to what the correct mode of action is.

Generally as a rule I ask myself what I might be doing at home should I decide to take the day off.

In your case you might be getting down to work on presentation which is probably worse for your ailing health than it would have been to get out of bed and go to work making sambos.

IMHO I think if you're well enough to do a presentation then you're well enough to go to work.

The criteria is if you don't want to go to work for whatever reason you have a sick day. You get a certain amount a year make the most of them.

Was it my constant posting on boards that alerted you to the hard work I'm currently doing on my presentation? For the record, it's finished and I just need to practise it. And really, a 10 minute presentation doesn't really compare with 6 hours of standing and heavy lifting and being friendly, all the while standing beside an open door in Scotland in the middle of winter. And FINALLY, I'm still in bed, wrapped up with a cup of tea, a pint of Vitamin C, a pack of Strepsils and some Ibuprofen.

I'm not sure what your agenda is here, Tim, but you're not doing very well in your attempt to outwit me...

Well you never said you were only practising it! And you also never stated it was finished when you came to us with your terrible dilemma - saying 'for the record' doesn't change the fact that you never said it in the first place. So in effect this changes everything...

What you should have said in your original post was...

"I'm clearly too sick to go to work today - maybe I'll use the time to practice my presentation.

    Discuss."

Nor did I say "I've a whole presentation to do from the start". I simply said I could do with working on it, which you interpreted your own special way to try and make me look bad. Seeing as your interpretation was completely false, all of your arguments are now null and void.

Also, I mentioned the presentation in passing, it was no way the centre point of my original post. I don't know why you're focussing on it.

You're dead right there. You didn't say any of these things but I guess it comes down to interpretation - But I do think it's unfair to suggest that I've interpreted your comments in my 'own special way'. By saying this are you suggesting that I'm in some way 'special'? Is this your official position as a moderator on a public forum? Anyone who challenges what you're saying is automatically wrong/stupid? Maybe you could clarify?

The thing is, the presentation is pivitol to the whole set of dramatics you put forward. It was written in such a way that a person might get the impression that you were skiving off work to do a presentation...

We can clearly see now that this is not the case. You were in fact sick and completely entitled to take a day off from making sambos.

Point to note: this is not a public forum. It is privately owned. Sure the general public can wander in and amuse themselves, but it's still a private club.
