    Hi guys,

I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 and it is gone really slow recently. When I turn it on the fan starts straight away and doesnt stop running??
Previously the fan only came on after it got warm.

A couple of people in college used it briefly via their USB keys and I'm suspecting that it now has a virus of some sort.

Any ideas what might be causing the problem?
    ....and any solutions?

    Cheers,
    Silvera.

What anti virus do you have? If it's norton or mc afee. Uninstall it and download avg. Run an anti virus scan. Download spybot and run a scan. Then download ccleaner and run that. This will clean out any viruses and spyware and get rid of any crap in it. This should help.

I had this problem on my DELL 6400.
The way I fixed it was to install the very latest BIOS from the DELL support site.
You'll need the service tag which is located on the bottom of the laptop.

Once the latest BIOS was installed the laptop boots as normal. :)

Are you running Vista, I have seen a lot of people with this problem and it was due to the power settings being set to conserve power, which resulted in the CPU running at a reduced speed. Check the power icon on the bottom right of the task bar and set it to best performance.

Failing that tell us what security software you have installed. Some programs hog system resources. Also check for spyware. Run a scan with spybot and Adaware.

Go to www.pcpitstop.com and run a diagnostic on your machine and post your results.

Click on run and type msconfig and press enter. Check the programs that are set to start up automatically under the start up tab, these eat away at resources also and don't need to run at start up.

Have you any P2P software installed, these can cause problems too

Try those few things and let me know how you get on.

    Chris.

Same prob with my XPS M1210 - sorted it after A08 went on.

    I misread your post.

Have you tried resetting your BIOS to recommended settings?

A BIOS Upgrade can help and AVG is the best for the Anti-Virus. You might also edit what's starting up with windows. I found this to greatly increase performance in some cases.

    Go to Start/Run, Type msconfig

when the System Configuration Utility opens goto the Startup Tab

You can either click Disable All or if you want you can manually uncheck the porograms you don't want starting up.

Don't worry about unticking something that windows needs. If Windows needs it, it will start it up automatically.

You will have to reboot your system, and when Windows opens it will tell you that you are using an edited startup ( or something like that ), tick the radio button to not show this the next time and work away.

Not entirely true, if you untick your antivirus software it won't run unless you launch the program. Best to do it as a process of elimination as if you change too many things at once you won't know what was causing the problem in the first place.

    Hey,

If the fan is coming on from the very start of you powering the laptop on, it may well be a BIOS update that is needed. But this could also be a sign of a potential hardware issue, possible cpu.
