10 pack of bulbs for 9.99 in Woodies

    GU10 and MR16 types available (50W)

this is the cheapest I've seen anywhere for these.

That is a good deal. I bought a box for e15 from ebay (delivery included). I went to tesco's to buy these and they were priced at e6 each!

You can get LED replacements now, cost a little more but last 30times longer or something, and use a fraction of the energy.

they cost a lot more, and I've heard mixed reports about them with some people saying the light is very harsh. They're also difficult to get in a bricks-and-mortar shop. Woodies have one type but with only 9 leds in them they are unlikely to be an adequate replacement for a 50W bulb.

I would be interested in switching if I could find a type that was an adequate replacement - I'm conscious of how much juice the halogen versions use...

Well thats since you found the normal ones at a good price! normal ones are usually expensive. Think they were around €6 on ebay if you got a few

Yep 50W each, in my kitchen there is a fitting that takes 5 or 6 of them, that is 250-300W. Electricity is around 16cent per hour per kW, so ~5cent an hour, 4-5 hours a day is ~€1.50 a week. So they will pay themselves back soon enough.

The normal ones keep breaking, LEDs last years, so it is worth it. Also there is the hassle of changing them. My parents got new downlighting in toilets and a few have started to go, it is a pain changing those ones.

My only worry is the light quality as you mention. I reckon I will get one and put it in my array and see how it goes. I want rid of the light fitting completely, others in the house want it still.

I have a 3W LED torch that has decent light.

They say some are equivalent to a 50W, I doubt it, they usually use some meter system, there are many ways of measuring light, so they probably just use some system that happens to make them equivalent at some point. But even if it was equivalent to 20-30W I have enough in the kitchen to work.
