I'm the first one to admit that i am completely clueless when it comes to porting (only heard of it Saturday when my Cod4 online play came to an abrupt end), found this link below on activision support site which gives various numbers etc but have no idea what to do with them, can somebody give me a quick guide? i'm on Eircom using a netopia router so i'd expect there's a lot of people in the same Boat.

    Thanks in advance

Give this a read, I'm at a loss too. The user 'Nialler' on this forum seems to know how to do it, maybe he'll show up?

There's a **** load of problems on the Infinity Ward side of things - they're overhauling their severs apparently.

good man, thanks for the reply definately in the same boat so, you've got further than i did, i tried messing around with ports on router and made a balls of it, warhawk still works tho. If infinity ward are sorting it out should we just wait or something?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 20,346 ✭✭✭✭KdjaCL

infinity ward wont open ports for you :)

www.portforeard.com and find your router and follow the guide, many many many games use ports

its in your best interests to learn how to do it.

On Pro evo boad every eyar there are tonnes of people wanting to know how to do it.

www.portforward.com is right, the guides are perfect and easy to understand, you have to do it to play.

Go to Activisions website, look for COD4'sActivision support. Here you will find port numbers. There are two types: UDP and TCP.
On your desktop you should have an eircom iconClicking on this will take you to your netopia router settings.
    Click on "Custom Services"
Here you should see a button called "Define Custom service" click on it.
Next you are presented with two options, use the first one-Port Forwarding range of ports.
Click on next, here you must enter the port details. Make up a name eg. cod1.
There are three boxes, pick a port number and type it in all three boxes and mark it as either UDP or TCP according to activisions website. You must do this with all the port numbers.
Once you have them all entered you must enable them.
Go back to the custom service menu and there should be a drop down list, find all the ones you made eg cod1, cod2 etc. and enable them.
You should now be able to get the game going ok.
I hope this helps, I'm no tech head myself and it took me a while to fugure this stuff out as well :D

ah no! still no joy, what is the host device, the ps3 i take it? how do you find its IP address and does static NAT(whatever that is) make a difference?

    Ports 3658, 3478, 3074, 3075 are UDP.
    Ports 80, 443, 5223 are TCP.

So you added 7 configurations of port-forwarding? Thanks mate, you're a ledge.

IW are having issues with the ps3 online game because it seems too many people wrecked their servers over the weekend. should have had a ps3 server farm like the guys running warhawk eh? ;)

they're fixing it now and hope to have all this ironed out in the next 48 hours

Thats good to know, so hopefully will be all sorted in next couple of days, its a pity cause the few games i played online were class

Well man I got into one game on Saturday without messing with ports - but that was it. I lost the connection and couldn't log in again. I've sinced messed with port forwarding as per Activisions site but I'm still not having any luck. I'll try when I get home today.

I wouldn't disable the firewall, you'll open yourself to alot of potentially bad stuff. The point of opening ports is to let certain things in.

If I were you I'd play single player for now. A load of us are having this problem, maybe you should wait and see how things go over the next day or two.

Thanx dude, I have it off cause i have a few things wireless connected and this wep is a pain, no probs so far, only complaint is about letting the bad stuff in I keep getting shot in resistance fall of man (
    Wait and see

Yes. Read back a few posts there where I described how to fix the problem. I am not typing all that s**t out again.

Your post was great but I'm still having the problem even with those ports open. I'll check again tonight.

Still having problems. I know people are still having grief because I checked the infinity ward forum. Also thinking of reversing that port-forwarding stuff, doesn't seem to have made a difference.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 385 ✭✭hollywoodhoppy

my only saving grace is i'm not alone which is good! I think rule of thumb from now on for me is any online games, just gonna stick with my xbox or are xbox people having same probs?!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭whitetrash

AFAIK the multiplayer is working fine on xbox and pc. If your router has a DMZ you could try putting the ps3 in there, that way it's exposed fully to the net and shouldn't need ports forwarded. Worked briefly for me anyway, but I was still having connection issues in game and really long matchmaking waits.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 385 ✭✭hollywoodhoppy

is the dmz your host device or something like that? is there any chance this problem may iron itself out rather than playing around with the router settings etc?

DMZ is an option on some routers. So you go to your router config page and it might be there. Basically you pick one ip address (your ps3's) and the router lets any traffic into it that wants to go, no firewall or nat or anything.

AFAIK the developers have already patched the servers so if it's not working for you now then you need to mess with the ports. There's a post on the developer forums where you can submit your isp and router type to them and say what problem you're having.

Having read alot of angry posts on various forums, I still think there's an overriding problem with the Multiplayer aspects of this game, and I think it is only something that IW can fix, or tell us specifically how to fix. The main argument for this in other threads is that every other online game runs fine right out of the box. I've messed with ports but nothing. I've played online, but now I'm starting to think that it's just down to chance. The original solution from Infinity Ward to wait it out when trying to connect was also BS, I waited 15-20 minutes and still got nothing. Shame really.

I've had a pretty negative experience all-round with my PS3 and online games, it sucks. No you're not alone, still alot of people having issues with it seemingly. Dunno what else IW can or will do. Have you tried the port-forwarding?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭whitetrash

I regret buying the ps3 version over the xbox one now, I'd assumed the ps3 one would be better because it would be running on dedicated servers rather than peer to peer like xbl.

I haven't tried since the servers were supposedly fixed, but I've only managed to get 3 games since buying (3 games plagued with connection problems) and that was with my ps3 in my router's DMZ. Had no problems with warhawk or calling all cars, so I really hope they fixed the issue by now.

Was playing til 1 last night. No issues.

Was booted out of the lobby every so often between games but another game started almost immediately. As for your issues, when you try to connect to a game, your ping is tested and if it is good enough, you're automatically connected to users near you so that lag is reduced.

It might be you need to upgrade your web connection and don't be doing what a friend of mine was doing. He was downloading demos and trying to play online at the same time! Muppet!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 746 ✭✭✭whitetrash

Hmm, I thought it automatically paused download demos when you go to play online?

Anyway the games I did get I had what looks like the best quality ping, but still had "connection interrupted" problems in what games I could get. This was pre any patching the devs did however.

I have noticed more players online since the patch... though that may be because of the fact that not everyone bought the game on launch day!

I loved you in Metal Gear ;) Any chance you could tell us how your connection is setup? Wireless/Wired, ports open, NAT 1,2,3?

I'd love to go with a wired connection but the location of my router means a Cat 5 cable wont reach my PS3 :(

Oh and by patch you mean them patching their servers right? Because I didn't downlaod any update....

Yeah, it's a server side issue according to them. So no patch to download (yet)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22 cathalspot

It think it's the servers, I work nights and I have been playing today, logging into games has been a little slow but with no problems. At night when the servers here are busy not so easy, traffic my friend, traffic.
As for pings I seem to be playing Americans so I am not so sure how selective they are ). Buy more servers please.
I was rated something like 124,345 when I first got online, now thats 124,345 times $100 (per game) do the math. I think a few servers are not too much to ask.
My blue tooth headset wont work with this game.
I am going to take off wifi and connect with Ethernet cable, see if has any improvement, let ya all know,
    Cathal

Can I ask why you opened that particular port? I didn't see it mentioned on the Activision support site.

Maybe it's his torrent port :D

No, I opened a different one for...

Anyhoo, that was one of the ports I saw listed to open. Can't quite remember now but I think I found it somewhere on the Playstation site.

...I think. Well it works so I keep using it!

According to IW forums you need to open these two ports:

    Port:
    3075 UDP
    3074 UDP

Same as yourself, very hit and miss. Some days I get on, sometimes I'm just left waiting. Poor product, they Beta tested the X Box version and they've no issues.

I've been having a mixed mulitplayer experience with COD4 it's taking ages to find maches and when it does eventually find a match it only finds one if I'm lucky, i'm used to pc multiplayer where dozens of match options appear, is this normal for a playstation or is the port forwarding thing having something to do with it?

Call of Duty multiplayer might as well not exist, it's seriously ****ing flawed

I think the port forwarding thing was only a temporary fix for people who were getting stuck with the "Downloading Game Settings..." message on screen. They really need to update the multiplayer side of things. Warhawk lets you choose the server you want to play on, just like a PC game would list whatever servers are available. I see no reason why It can't be done with COD4
