My son is asking Santa for a Nintendo wii.
Just wondering if anyone ever bought one it in the US and got it sent over??
    Will it work over here?

Irish wii games wont work on U.S console.

It will work over here, but it's technically region locked. That means that if you buy it in the US, only games bought in the US will work on it. You won't be able to buy games here and play them on it.

Went on a mad WII hunt over the weekend and everywhere was sold out! Smyths, Argos, Game, Currys, Virgin...

So be warned, not as easy to pick up as you would think!

eBay will be your best bet at this stage folks. ;)

You will not be able to play European (PAL) games on a US Wii. You could of course get it modified and then it would play them. You would then however be faced with a new problem that not many people know about.
Your USA Wii comes with US Firmware. The very latest games will automatically update the firmware of the machine they are played on. If you update US Firmware with European Firmware you are highly likely to "brick (break)" your machine and having invalidated the warranty will lose all.
Sorry to be negative but you could always stay american (the games are much cheaper as well) and just hope that one of your childs friends doesn't lend them a game!

bit off topic but does a child that small really need a Wii?

ps : by the way im not getting all high and mighty. i just havent played a Wii or taken much notice of its games other than Wii sports and am wondering if a small child could genuinely get a whole lot out of one

Komplett are getting 63 in on Nov 27 i think. I ordered one tonight for someone. Try there or spend a fortune buying one on either Amazon or Play.

Has no-one learned the lessons of last year.

I had to beat down 3 screaming kids to get mine, and I bought out all the copies of zelda as well ;)

That's obvious! I've had several small children visit me more frequently since I got a Wii (nephews and nieces, before the aspertion-casting begins) and I can state categorically that yes, a small child will get plenty out of it.

    Off topic, but...

Bloody hell..... Sounds like a lot of hard work. I hope the kids had the decencey to cry after all the work you put into it.

Remember getting mine on launch day last year. Preordered about 1 month before. Checkout girl handing me my machine. This guy saunters up to the till: I'll take one of those "Why" things there..........
Preorder folks. Nintendo gave shortage warnings last month

That was their plan all along - to leave everyone short.

You're a victim of their success in making a good and entertaining product which is extremely popular.

By the end of August the PS3 had sold 3.7 million units. It has been on sale for around the same length of time as the Wii.
The xBox 360 had sold 8.9 million units - and has been on sale for a year longer than the Wii.
The Wii had sold 9 million units.

Those nasty people at Nintendo - imagine the nerve of them only making (and selling) 9 million of them in a year!

On the plus side - you can always get a PS3 or an xBox 360. It'll probably cost more than the ebay price for the Wii though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11 bobhoskins

Yes you're so right. Never thought of it like that. Still leaves me the issue of a 10 year old going to be very disappointed unless I can pull the fat out of the fire somewhere! Imagine - he doesn't want a cutting edge PS3 or Xbox, but rather the clunkier looking Wii - they are good fun though to be fair.

Order it from Amazon.de . It's not as popular in Germany (at least there is no shortage), and Amazon seems to have loads of stock. They ship to Ireland, and overall it probably will work out even cheaper then any shop in Dublin.

The Console can be set to English and the Instructions come in English as well.

    Have you tried Powercity ?
    They're online as well powercity.ie
which is handy as they show the stock levels in each store

I got one there last week

Strange, Had a look and they seem to be hiding the Wii
searched via google and found this

    http://www.powercity.ie/index.php?par=20-35-42067

it appears to show some stock in some stores
Best to ring them and see if they can put one aside
if they have any that is?

How is the Wii "clunkier" when it's tiny? I overheard a conversation this morning in Smyths (by the Kinsale Roundabout, Cork) when I was buying a DS for my sister's birthday; "we aren't doing any preorders for the Wii this Christmas, first come first serve and our next delivery is Monday next". Why wouldn't they be taking pre-orders? Seems crazy to me.

    Just tried it that way....

Got a phone call 2 seconds later off Power City to say all those are pre-reserved and out of stock.

I have used US firmware a few times on my EU Wii and its been fine, no brick.

The reason most stores aren't taking pre-orders this christmas is because nowhere can guarantee that they will be delivered on time.
This is by no means the fault of the stores, because I myself work in one of the huge Electric chains and we all did forsee the demand and our store on its own had 300 units ordered and we were told there was none by the suppliers

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 767 ✭✭✭fmul9798

Most of us already know this, but this will publicise it even more, and possibly make them even more difficult to obtain:

Oh I know it has nothing to do with the stores, after all they aren't the ones producing the consoles.

Just bought one this morning "phew". Gamestop in Athlone had a few. The sales assistant wouldn't say how many they had left in stock.

Just order one from Germany for 271euro delivered to Ireland with payment by PayPal. Can use credit card for a little extra but they require faxed copy of card and signature.
    http://www.computeruniverse.net/community/logout.asp?noconfirm=true&GoCart=
    Better than waiting for Komplett.
Also looks like it has a 24 month warranty.

Thanks for the tip off, I also ordered one immediately after reading your post. Wii + sports + extra Nunchuk (wiimote out of stock) + UPS delivery by paypal for 313 euro.... I'd pay that for a Wii and Nunchuk over here.....

Komplett are expecting stock on the 13/12. I've ordered one, no guarantee they'll actually arrive by xmas though.
