strange noises

can someone explain this to me? or think of a logical explanation?

I live in an attached house (i think thats the right word, maybe its terraced, there's a house attached on both sides), its three floors high, its a student house. Every now and again when we are sitting in the sitting room watching tv or online or something, we hear noises in the house, like someone is walking up or down the stairs. There is no one living in either house beside us (great for the house parties) and we usually hear it late at night so its impossible that someone is next door.

Im used to creeky houses and everything so i dont mind it but the strange thing is my dog barks when she hears it. She only ever barks when people come into the house or are about to come into the sitting room so it cant be squeaky floorboards or anything like that.

I'm totally confused, does anyone know what it could be? i know for certain that there's no one else in the house when this happens!

any theories at all would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys!

I wouldnt make a theory based on just that info. What I would say is make a diary of the noises. Write own when they happen, time, day etc and a brief description of the noise and how long it lasts.

Give it a month to see if there is a pattern.

I would agree with 6th, make a diary of when it happens, where it happens, whos in the house, what the weather is like outside, pretty much everything you can think of! On the other hand it could be squatters!?

squatters? i dont think so, the only way into the houses are through the front doors, to get in the back door you have to go into a construction site and climb a wall! Ill make a diary up so and get back to ye in a few weeks about it!

i agree with 6th make a dairy and get some to check the attic, there might be birds or even rats ,ive come across this before when people say they have heard footsteps but it was the old house next door was vibrating from the traffic out side ,(ie) when a truck passed the house the house would rumble and in some parts of the house you would think it was someone upstairs, but keep us informed,;)

Hey lil lisa, if you can try and record the noise as well. On another note if the house is old it could be the tank filling in the hot press, I used to babysit years ago for someone and everytime the tank would fill it always sounded like someone was walking in the hall, freaked me out once for twice.

I was going to suggest recording also, should be simple enough, leave the recorder at the bottom of the stairs at around the time you usually hear the noises. If nothing else,it will give you a better idea as to whether the noises are from your house or outside.

ok, ill try that! its definitely not the attic or the tank though cos they are all on the third floor, it could be traffic but my dog wouldnt bark if it was something outside!
