    Hey all,

Having a problem with a usb modem from 3 and a new dell laptop with
    Vista Basic.

I ve tried the modem on my own Vista Premium laptop and it s fine and on another with XP.

    So the modem is fine.

When it connects at first it is ment to see the modem as a USB mass storage device at first and install the software from there but for what ever reason it see s it as a CD Rom drive.

So i changed the driver and it does pick it up properly now but then drops it and picks it up again and drops it and picks it up again etc.

Anyone any advice on what I can do to sort this.

Sounds more like a hardware compatability problem than windows problem. I had something similar with a Razer Copperhead mouse, after updating to the latest firmware, it would constantly be detected, undetected, detected.

Have you tried updating the bios?

Also, USB modem's = tool of the devil, there is a blueprint available for implementing broadband modem's in Windows, but very few manufacturers will follow it, all doing it their own silly ways, I mean, detecting it as a mass storage device, wtf. The old speedtouch dsl modems would emulate an ISDN modem, and caused nearly as many bluescreens as graphics card drivers.

There's no difference under the hood between premium and basic by the way, both use the same drivers in the same way.

make sure you are using the same USB port it was installed on originally , stupid but...
do a system restore to get back before the modem was used first

also you should have got a double headed usb cable for use when one port can's supply enough power try both plugged in
try a usb hub that has it's own power supply - maybe your monitor has a usb hub built in

yeah the cd thing sounds a little strange

Thats what I thought but when I use it on my own HP laptop it installs the same way and works fine.

Will try the dual cable and see if that makes any difference. Thanks for
    your help lads.

All those Huwaei (sp?) modems mount as a mass storage device. Basically so the operator doesn't need to provide a driver CD (talk about cost cutting!). After the mobile connect software (or whatever) is launched it then unmounts the mass storage device and enumerates the modem component. It's detected as a dial-up modem from that point.

It's a flaky piece of kit, my brother's PC detected it but the "CD drive" was empty. No way could he get it to show the contents. I tried it on my laptop and it worked so copied the files on to a CD-RW. He installed it from that but when he tried to launch the software it reported a "Data modem invalid" error. He returned the modem to 3 and got DSL in the end.
