I had my handbag stolen last night outside a pub in south kings street in Dublin, at st Stephen's green shopping center. I rang the guards on the off chance that someone found it and handed it in. But no luck. has anyone any advise of what I could do to maybe find it? I know there's not much hope but if any one has any ideas.

Cancel ATM and credit cards ASAP!
Contact your phone company and suspend your a/c and block your EMEI of your mobile phone so somebody can't use it anymore.

Thats about it, start replacing whatever was in it

Yup, that seems to be the best you can do. Sorry to hear it! Hopefully what goes around comes around...:o

You'll be very lucky to see it again.

Take Cabaal's advice and make sure that all your cards have been cancelled, and that your phone's SIM card has been blocked.

    Thanks.
Yes I canceled my ATM card, luckily I had my mobile in my coat pocket. House keys of course were in the bag and it's the inconvenience of losing them really. It happened so quick, I'm shocked as I'm usually so careful.
thanks for all your help and replies. Maybe all my bad luck is gone with it..

Crap happens. At least you weren't attacked for your bag or worse.

Inconvenient though it may be, at least you're OK. Every thing is only material.

Can I just ask, was it snatched off you, or stolen while it was on the table, floor etc? Am I going to have to start walking around with my handbag underneath my coat again?! Horrible thing to have gone through for you, hope that you are OK.

No I was outside sitting on a bench chating to a friend and my bag was between us. Didn't even see anyone take it. I rang some of the pubs and shops to see if had been dumped and maybe handed in but I suppose that's a waste of time. Luckly my friend had enough cash to get me in a taxi home.

For your own homes security I would recommend changing any locks that may have been affected by your house keys being taken

Check bins and skips in the immediate area for the bag itself (they will have wanted to dump it as soon as they got anything useful out of it) but cancel all cards, change locks etc.

Go down to the flats behind st stephens green and have a look around. They aren't interested in your personal belongings only looking for cash, phone and cards. You may still find the bag.
I saw a girl being mugged down there a few years back and the kids around the area went "looking" in the "chutes" and dustbins for the girl.

Once you are very sure nothing had your address on it then you dont have to change your locks on the house. But if there was anything I would change the locks. That area is a hot spot for getting mugged.
I would take a walk around there and the back of the adelaide apartments.
Also the little lane at the back of RSC.
I hope you find it, happened to me before and it's a terrible thing. You think its just a bag until you realise all the personal stuff you had in it.

I agree, its most likely gone in a bin somewhere very close by. Sorry it had to happen to you, Ive had my bag nicked too its a rotten feeling.

+1 on the changing locks thing, if you think they might have your address.

I remember ages ago looking out the window of a shopping centre toilet,(which could open) the roof outside was littered with handbags.

    Hi All
just want to say thanks for all the support and great advice.
Just a thought, and a bit of useful info for you all: a friend of mine advised me to change the house locks,(which we have) as it is now common place in this type of situation for the guilty to look your name up on the register of electorates and find your address. Beware everyone should anything like this happen to you, you don't have to have your address in your wallet or bag to be a target all they need is your name and your keys!!!

Thanks..I'll take that on board if it happens to me...sorry you had to go through such a mess...hope you're feeling better now. :)

Yes have keys and my plastic back, funny how losing those things makes you feel insecure, guess they are so personal to you and it's annoying when someone you dont know gets that close. Also upset at what the money was probably used for....

Of course you're upset..i'd be too...so glad you got it all replaced though...best thing...but tis annoying alright.

Just a question! But were or what is this register of electorates?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 33,518 ✭✭✭✭dudara

There is a public version of the electoral register which is available for viewing in public facilities such as libraries. This is a list of all people entitled to vote in elections in Ireland and includes their addresses.

You can choose to have your name excluded from the publically printed version, but still be listed on the electoral register

slightly off topic, but how can the get your address off the registor of electors? When I want to check that I'm listed on the register online I need the number of my house!! I know they could check the printed version, but surely that's way too much hassle & esp in Dublin....
