Microphone help

    Sorry if this is in the wrong place but dunno where to put it.

    Basically I need to record myself (never would have thought that with a microphone...!). But when I plug it in and switch the microphone on nothing happens. First of all it IS in the right plug but I don't know if the microphone is broken because it's quite old. Also, is there a program that comes on Windows Xp to record and playback? I don't want anything fancy just something that will record for a few minutes and playback. I thought there was a program that came with Wibdows which was already on my computer but I can't find it. Is there an alternative download?

    Sorry for all the questions...this should be simple!
