eircom netopia routers wireless throughput

    Howye all,

    What is the highest wireless throughput rate for the eircom netopia routers ?. I've been messing with mine (I normally use ethernet) and lately have been setting up pc's for people to use with wireless. I've noticed that the maximum wireless throughput seems to be 50 - 60 Kbytes/sec, even when right next to the router. disabling wireless security/setting to .11g on the router makes little difference. And I've noticed this on other netopia routers as well.. so 'twould seem they're a bit crippled.

    Well the 802.11g standard has a max throughput of 54 Mbps. This is rarely achieved though. Even when 'connected' at this speed, throughput of 30 Mbps or less seems more like what is achieved. Won't make any difference with a typical Irish broadband connection of, say 2 Mbps.

    How did you come to the figure of 50-60 kbps? That's hardly acceptable.

    50 - 60 Kbytes/sec

    He said Kbytes per second ( windows reports in bytes ) whereas you said Kbps which is generally bits per second ,

    Byte = 8 bits

    So multiply by 8 and hes getting 400 -480 kbps , still very low , should be much higher than that.
    Are you sure it says Kbytes and not Mbytes ?

    I have a netopia router , and have absolutely no issues with it , not crippled at all , and regularly hit 35 -40 mbps. I can stream movies to my HTPC with it and no slowdowns. It was supplied with the broadband package and I see no reason to change it.

    Thanks for keeping me on my toes. I meant to type Kbps (I did it for Mbps twice in my original post). Either way, as we both agree, it is rather low.

    yes i meant Kbytes, as in the figure you see on a windows file download for example. This is on a 1 meg package, and mine runs at the full 1 meg - download something via ethernet gets around the 100 Kbytes/sec mark as expected, but over the wireless connection only seems to achieve around the 60 Kbytes/sec mark for the same download. Even when right next to the router. I know all about the actual wireless throughput vs. "on the box" speeds, but it should be at least able to keep up with the DSL i would think. I've seen it on several lappy's / pci cards now.
