Tis an unusual composition I suppose, so any comments welcome!

    Cheers,

Very nice photo, love the bird featured, plenty of them here in Galway.
Only thing I dislike is the fact he's not centred in the picture, other than that its fantastic!
Also do you have a higher res version for my desktop background?!

    Very nice shot,

Very nice picture indeed, great capture. Not so sure about the bottom right hand corner of the picture. I think there might be too much of the water in it. The water coming down the steps(?) is lovely and the gaps where you can see the steps give it a nice contrast.

    Have you tried alternate crops?

    cracking shot beef :-)

Dont think the bird should have been centered, but I would have had him on the right... so you can follow his gaze downstream. Afcourse no idea if that would have been possible, might have been alot of rubbish to his left ;)

    Thanks guys!

Cheers for the suggestions, as I said I was trying something different with the crop there...

Anyhow, here's another, better? Certainly a more conventional crop!

    that bolt coming through the water beside his head is very distracting; I've spent more time looking at it than the bird;

maybe try cloning it out or blurring it :D

That's better than the first - like it.

I actually prefer the first one, though a tighter crop on the second, and taking some of the brown outta the water would even it up that bit more. :)

    never mind that bolt :)

Not sure, think the water's kinda taking over in the second one. Maybe a crop like the attached? Or is that too conventional with the thirds something rule? :D

Still a great capture of a fine bird regardless the crop tho:)

I like them both - preference for the first. In both - the splash pool at the bottom is kinda out of kilter with the wonderful stream gushing down the rocks. I guess that what I'm trying to say is that i'm not sure whether the contrast between the sharpness of the water running down the rock against the softness of the splash pool works. Perhaps try to crop out some of it if you agree. The conveyance of the movement of the water in the overall image is great.

That being said, I think Dobbs crop is not bad at all including the splash pool.

You've managed to capture something special - its almost oil painting like. Well done.

    Hmmm.

On seeing the shot as the page loaded it was very 'bam!' which I think is great. There's a strong diagonal going from top right to lower left, then the heron's head in the top left corner completes a little sort of triangle that keeps your view going all over in a nice pattern. But the second shot just seems a little pedestrian - it doesn't have the same impact, and i think it's because we're all so accustomed to the old 'nose room' rule of composition. I think the first shot is an excellent example of how to break rules well :D

My only nitpicks with the first would be - clone out the bolt next to the bird's head, and in the lower right, do a bit of levels to bring some detail back into the water because it's got a big bright patch that's a bit distracting - just get it to the same level of detail/brightness as the rest and that's sorted.

Obviously there are different opinions here though, try getting both printed at A4, live with them for a few days and see which you still enjoy looking at - or, put them both away for a few days, take them back out and I bet you'll have an instant favourite.

    It really is beautiful though.
