iPod to speakers - phono jack or ipod interface

I'm thinking of getting a iPod speaker/dock set-up for the house/gf. Rather than getting a iPod specific piece of kit I was just going to go for an amp + speakers (as I have an iRiver myself).

Most of the iPod specific set-ups connect via the interface on the bottom of the iPod (presumably to facilitate simultaneous charging). If I get an amp I'd be looking at a 3.5/RCA cable from the iPod phono jack for the sound signal.

My question is this: Would there be any difference in terms of sound quality using the phono jack as opposed to the interface on the bottom of the iPod?

Yes , there is a considerable difference between the two outputs in terms of quality ,

The headphone jack is not line level so the sound will vary with the volume in terms of quality when fed to the amp.

    The dock is better ,
The good news is that if you are buying an amp and speakers , then most new amps these days come with ipod docks.

    Great, thanks for the answer.

If the amp does not have an iPod dock would buying something similar to this be the equivalent in terms of quality?
