job offer dependant on passing medical

I've been offered a job with a big American co. based in Ireland. However it's dependant on me passing their medical.

My condition is this... my kidney function isn't as good as it should be, so I've got to take a blood pressure tablet every day. Have been taking this for about 2 years. Good case scenario is that things stay like this.

Condition doesn't currently affect my ability to work (I look as healthy as anyone else). Only attending hosp for checkup once every 4 months.

Though I could probably hide it (unless they do a blood test), I'd prefer if I was able to disclose my condition from the outset. (It'd probably be a sackable offence if they found out later, plus it'd be nice to think they might be flexible when I needed time off for medical appts etc.).

If I disclose my condition at the medical, I suspect that the employment offer will fall through.

    What would you do?

you have to tell them. its probably a condition that you tell them of all medical conditions. i suspect it wont be a problem though.
if you dont disclose it and they find out during the medical it may disqualify you from taking the job.

What WWM said, and also something to note: most medicals are to ensure you don't do any illegal drugs, etc, so you should be ok.

Usually they ask you some routine medical questions like do you have a history of heart disease, epilepsy, anything that would prevent you from carrying out your job like a bad back and you were supposed to lift things .....stuff like that.

They take blood pressure, height & weight and maybe a urine sample. I've never heard of a blood sample being taken though

Usually in a medical they'll ask you how many days you've been sick over the last year/two years. if you haven't missed much work you'll definitely be fine. Gernerally a medical will consist of a urine sample, blood pressure check, weight check (BMI) and and eye test and lung capacity test (blowing in to a tube). If you think anything will come up in the urine or blood pressure check it's best to say it on the form you fill out when you get there. That questionaire will ask if you have medical conditions. i.e. have you ever had any renal problems/epilepsy/kidney infections. The best thing to do is say, yes I have but I'm managing them/they don't cause me to miss work etc.

The only time I've heard people failing their medical is due to obesity (the role required a lot of travel) and what the doctor thought was undiagnosed schizophrenia.

    This is all correct.

If I were you I would defo disclose the Kidney problem. They need to know everything, as when it does come to you heading into hospital, they'll ask why and you'll have to tell them. They may say that you didnt say it in the Medical and not give you the time off.

If it's not too serious and wont affect your work, come clean!

Good luck. These medicals are a piece of pi55.

Thanks for all the replies, and esp. the pm from Hearvee.

I certainly feel more confident about disclosing now, and from what I hear, would be v unlucky if it was held against me.

I will post again around 1 Dec, and let ye know how I got on.

    Many thanks

The company offers free VHI (something I've not had previously).

But I wonder how it works if you have a pre-existing condition, like I do.
Are they still likely to give me cover?

    thx P

As far as I know they will give you cover...but your pre-existing kidney condition (and quite possibly any related conditions) won't be covered for 5 years under your policy

Actually they often do involve pee alright :D
Any medical I have done for a job included urine sample, eye sight and hearing test and a few routine questions based on your medical history and background.

    Had the medical today.
Declared my health situation, and their doc seemed satisfied with it.

Med consisted of: Health questionnaire, BP check, Stethoscope, Eye test, Piss into a pot, and Blow into this yoke as hard as you can.

    Spirometry.

I've had a medical with a reasonably large health history questionnaire, a full physical checkup, a full set of blood tests and spirometry. This was more in-depth as it was a post-contract medical for health monitoring purposes.

Conversely about 10 years ago I did a medical where the examination consisted of a doctor ticking a few boxes while I had a conversation with him about a completely unrelated topic.

They would be on dodgy grounds if they withdrew the job offer unless they had a clear indication that the medical condition would impact your ability to do the job in question. You could consider an Equality Tribunal case against them on grounds of discrimination relataing to a disability if they did withdraw the offer. The bad news is that this would probably take years to get through the system.
